“We shall have no better conditions in the future if we are satisfied with all those which we have at present” – Thomas Edison

When people find out I’m theAmerica’s #1 Mental Fitness Coach they often ask how advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) can help them. My answer is they can help you take control of your life, almost instantly. That often gets me the “Huh?” response. I tell them you can use them to change how you experience the world and therefore take control of your life.

How to Use NLP to Take Control of Your Life

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) tells us that there are three factors in control of how the world appears to you. These are 1) your physiology or how you use your body, 2) your language patterns or the words you use to define the world and yourself and 3) your beliefs or the things people and events you focus on. If you shift any of these three factors you can instantly change how you experience the world.

How to Shift Your Physiology

Your physiology is the way you carry your body. In order to have certain feelings you use your body a certain way. You can call this a body pattern.

When you shift the way you use your body, the way you move, the way you breathe, your face, the way you talk you send different signals to your brain which shifts the way you think.

For example, when you feel down you hold your body a certain way. You might feel a heavy weight on your shoulders and tightness in your upper back or neck. Your head may be slumped forward and your shoulders might be curled downwards. This is the pattern you have for feeling down.

But you also have a pattern for feeling good. You probably sit up straight, your head is more erect, your shoulders are more relaxed, all of these contribute to your feeling up.

You know what’s funny? You can put your body into one of these positions any time you want, shifting the way the world appears to you. Now you are seeing the elephant in a different way.

How to Shift Your Language Patterns

What you tell yourself, also known as self talk, has a direct affect on how you experience the world. These are also known as language patterns. Most people consistently use negative self talk instead of positive self talk. Why? It’s because that’s what we’ve all been taught in school, at home and by the media. But you can learn to shift your language patterns almost instantly using positive daily affirmations.

What’s a positive affirmation? A positive affirmation is something positive you tell yourself over and over again, out loud. When I say my positive affirmations I also use my physiology to put my body into a receptive state.

For example, a positive affirmation I use every day is “I totally and unconditionally love and accept myself just the way I am!” I say this, and other positive affirmations out loud as I am getting ready to do my morning Yoga and Qigong practice. As I say them I put my body into a positive state by standing straight, breathing deeply, and waving my arms around. Yes, it might seem strange but it works. By the time I get going I am feeling great and ready to take on the world! By doing this instead of getting up and watching the news like many people do I have shifted my experience of the world to the one I have chosen instead of the one chosen by my environment.

How to Shift Your Focus

Do this exercise for a moment and don’t read the next paragraph until after you do it. Close your eyes and think of the color blue. Think of your favorite shade of blue, think of the blue ocean, the blue sky, the blue of a soft baby’s blanket. Now open your eyes and read the next paragraph.

Now look for the color red. What do you see? You see the color blue everywhere. Why? Because that’s what you’ve been focusing on!

How do you change your focus? By changing the questions you ask yourself.

Most people ask themselves all the wrong questions. For example, when they make a mistake or something doesn’t go the way they would have liked it to they ask, “What’s wrong with me?” That sets their focus. You see, when you give your brain a question it will focus on coming up with an answer. So when you ask “What’s wrong with me?” your brain will focus on all the things you believe are “wrong” with you.

On the other hand if you ask yourself a better question, a question like, “What could I have done differently?” or “What did I learn from this?” your brain will shift it’s perspective and focus on those answers. Again you are experiencing the elephant in a different way

Shift How You Experience Life and Reshape Your Future

One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is the gift of becoming more than who you are already. You are not your past, your past behaviors, or your past events. You are more than that.

The problem most people they try to drive in the future looking in their rear view mirror. What would happen if you drove around town looking in the rear view mirror? You’d crash into everything! That’s the same thing that happens when you try to live your life by telling yourself you are your past. In order to change how you go though life you have to shift how your experience it.

When you start to chose how you use these three factors you can shift the way you experience life, almost instantly. Isn’t it time you began to take control of your life

People often ask me what I do. When I tell them that I am a hypnotherapist and NLP practitioner with an office in San Diego, they often ask, “What can hypnosis do for me? How can hypnosis or NLP help me?” Usually I tell them that hypnosis and NLP can help them make quick and significant shifts in their thinking.

What types of shifts? Hypnosis and NLP can help you overcome fears, pains, stresses and anxieties. They can help you break bad habits like smoking and develop good ones like exercising. They can help reduce the symptoms of some diseases. Hypnosis and NLP can help you think differently so that you can eliminate your mental blocks to success while encouraging you to take successful actions you may have avoided in the past.

In short, hypnosis can help catapult you into living the life you desire!

7 Benefits of Hypnosis and NLP

In this article I’d like to explore 7 benefits you can receive from hypnosis and NLP. Let’s dig in.

1. Reduce your pain

Do you have a physical condition that causes you a lot of pain, such as back or shoulder injury? Are you, like millions of other Americans suffering adverse side effects from your pain medications? Using hypnosis and NLP you can reduce or actually eliminate your pain.

Many doctors have been exposed to hypnosis for pain management. Ask your doctor about using self-hypnosis as part of your pain therapy. There are a growing number of doctors and physical therapists that recommend this over taking drugs for effective pain control. Hypnosis can even help you with the pain of severe injuries so that your body can heal quicker, again without the side effects of drugs.

If you’re contemplating surgery, ask your doctor to recommend an anesthesiologist who uses hypnosis instead of drugs. Hypnosis has been accepted by the American Medical Association as a viable anesthetic during surgery for over 50 years. Many dentists use it instead of anesthesia. Also, if you’re expecting, learn how you can use hypnosis for childbirth and avoid potentially hazardous side effects of drug anesthesia.

2. Overcome fears and anxieties

One of the most profound uses of especially NLP is helping people overcome their fears. Perhaps you have a fear of flying or you’re nervous about speaking in public. These types of fears can affect many aspects of your life and career. Many fears can even result in nightmares, but you can free yourself of these with hypnosis and NLP. Many times one or two sessions can help you eliminate your fears completely.

3. Eliminate bad habits

Do you smoke, overeat, bite your nails or just put things off all the time? Using hypnosis and NLP you can develop better eating and exercise habits so you can lose weight and keep it off, stop biting your fingernails, and avoid procrastination altogether. Many people have gotten rid of their pesky habits by using hypnosis and so can you.

4. Sail past mental blocks and on to success

Have you ever seen a runner who does very well but when the big race comes they pull up lame? The fear of success can do that to almost anyone. If you find that you’re always coming up just short of success in every endeavor then hypnosis and NLP can help you overcome it and succeed. You can discover your mental blocks to success and stop them using hypnosis and NLP.

5. Get rid of your stress

Has too much stress bogged you down lately? Stress affects everyone and can cause serious health issues. One of the most common things many of my clients say to me after their first hypnosis session is “I haven’t felt that relaxed in years.” The reason is they haven’t allowed themselves to relax. Hypnosis and NLP are both great ways to relieve stress. A hypnosis session can help your mind deal with stress in positive ways so you feel refreshed, energetic, and healthy again.

6. Conquer your addictions

Do you have an addiction to nicotine, caffeine, sugar, soda, or more serious drugs? One of the biggest reasons people come to me is to help them quit smoking. I have also helped many people deal with other addictions such as to alcohol and other recreational drugs. Hypnosis and NLP are effective tools in helping overcoming addictions so you can take back control of your life – permanently.

7. Find your lost memories

I have had clients who have needed to remember where they have left important documents or wanted to remember a person from their past. If you’re unable to remember something of great importance, there is a chance that a traumatic experience has blocked your access to it. In these cases a hypnosis session can be very helpful; it will help you access your subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind is where those memories have been stored, and a relaxing hypnosis session can be your key to unlock them.

Are There Any Negatives to Hypnosis?

Hypnosis and NLP are not cure alls. They cannot make anyone do anything they don’t want to do. The biggest problem you may encounter with hypnosis is you have to want the desired change to occur in order to enjoy permanent results. For example, do you really want to quit smoking? If you don’t, then even hypnosis and NLP won’t work to stop your addiction.

Remember, with hypnosis, you’re still awake and in control. No one can make you do anything you don’t want to do! So if you find that you are lukewarm or you want to change because someone else wants you to change its best you wait. These are the times when you will want to work on increasing your desire for the change you’re trying to effect before you use hypnosis and NLP to help you make the change.

As a coach that helps people develop their potential I have had a number of clients that come to me wanting to change. So the first thing I do is ask them what they want. Many times they tell me some fuzzy thing that they want or what they don’t want. I have to explain that if they want shift to happen, neither of these approaches works.

Three Steps to Setting and Achieving Goals

Setting and achieving goals is actually simple if you follow three steps. These steps are:

1. Set your goal.

In NLP this is known as an outcome. To do this you need to have a clear idea of what you want.

2. Monitor your results (feedback)

Having a clear understanding what you are doing and the results you are getting as a result of your efforts. In NLP this is known as sensory acuity.

3. Adjust your behavior until you achieve your desired outcome

As you receive your results you need to be willing and able to change your behavior until you get the result (outcome) you are searching for. In NLP this is known as flexibility.

Today we’re going to talk about developing a well formed outcome.

5 Steps to a Well-formed Outcome

In order to get anything or go anywhere in life you have to have a direction or an outcome because if you don’t know where you’re going anywhere you end up is just fine. You also have to shape your outcome in a way that motivates you to achieve it. To do this you have to have what Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP calls a well formed outcome.

How to Achieve Your Goals

As I already pointed out, in order to quickly achieve your goals you need to create a well formed outcome. A well formed outcome is one that contains the following criteria:

1. Positive – Your goal has to be stated in the positive. Why? This is because your subconscious mind can only understand a negative by turning it into a positive.

For example, don’t think of an elephant. Whatever you do, don’t think of an elephant. Now close your eyes. What are you thinking of? An elephant of course. Your subconscious mind cannot not think of an elephant.

The same goes for any goal you set. Let’s say you are struggling with finances and they are stressing you out so you state your goal as “I’m not going to be stress out by my finances.”

What does your subconscious mind hear? “I’m going to be stressed out by my finances.” A better way to state your goal would be “I am approaching my finances in a calm and collected manner.”

Always ask yourself, “What is it that I really want?”

That leads us to number 2…

2. Personal – You have to be the active participant in achieving the goal. Your outcome has to be reasonably within your control. If your outcome is a primarily a result of other people’s efforts it is not well formed.

Here’s an example many people can relate to. Let’s say your spouse or significant other who you love dearly has a personality that you don’t appreciate so you approach them and tell them about it and then ask them to change their behavior. How does that work? We all know that this approach usually doesn’t work. Instead figure out what you need to do in order to draw out the response you are looking for.

Ask yourself “What will I do to achieve my outcome?”

Remember, your outcome or goal needs to be about you and your behavior, not someone else’s.

Now that you have established a personal goal it then you need to experience it in the…

3. Present – You need to experience your goal as if it’s already accomplished. You need to determine how you will know when you’ve achieved your goal. How will the achievement of that goal that look, feel and sound like? This gets your imagination in the attraction mode pulling your goals toward you.

For example if your goal is to get into shape and be slimmer what will that look, feel and sound like? Are you a certain weight, a certain pant or dress size or working out a certain number of times a week? What are people telling you about your appearance? How does that make you feel?

Ask yourself “How will this look, feel and sound like when I’ve accomplished my goal?”

Now to be sure this is a well formed goal you need to be sure that it is…

4. Specific – Your outcome has to be something specific, not fuzzy. For example, people when come to me and tell me “I want to be happy” my first question to them is, “What does being happy mean?” Most of the time they can’t explain what being happy means to them. This is a fuzzy goal

You goal needs to have a real and tangible outcome. Let’s say that you are unhappy with your work situation. You feel you are not getting paid enough and working too many hours. Instead of “I want to be happy” you would say “I want to work at a job that pays me $100,000 a year and that allows me to be home 3 nights a week and weekends and gives me 4 weeks of vacation that I use every year.” Now your subconscious mind understands what it is that you really want.

When you are developing a specific goal use the journalism model to create it. Ask questions that determine the who, what, when, where, and how of your outcome. This leads us to number 5…

5. Right-sized – Your outcome needs to be both large enough to motivate you as well as something that you can believe you can accomplish.

If you have a goal that is too large it can and will de-motivate you. Ask yourself “What is preventing me from doing this?” Once you figure the answer out write out your smaller, more doable goals.

For example, if your goal is to write a book, unless you’ve written a book before (and most times even if you have) this can seem like an overwhelming task. What you need to do is break the large outcome into smaller, more easily achievable tasks.

So in this case the large outcome of writing a book might be broken down into writing three pages a day or one chapter of 15 pages a week. These outcomes can seem very doable and will build up to accomplish your large goal.

On the other hand if the outcome is too small, like cleaning the garage, then ask yourself, “If I do this what will I get from it.” Now remember, as we discussed in number 2, this has to be about you. So if your significant other has asked you to clean up the garage you have to decide what you’ll get out of it, things like being able to find your stuff easier or being able to park your car without running them over.

So when setting your outcome, ask yourself, “Is this the right-sized outcome?”

That’s How to Set an Outcome

There you have it, the first step of how to achieve your goals. By using these 5 criteria for setting and achieving your well formed outcome or goals you are creating goals that will motivate you, goals you’ll want to achieve.

Next time we’ll talk about step number 2, monitoring your results.

“Who has confidence in himself will gain the confidence of others.” – Leib Lazarow

I’m hallucinating (for me to hallucinate means to imagine) that sometimes things happen that result in you developing self doubt. I’m also hallucinating that when you doubt yourself your self-esteem and confidence suffer. That’s normal. Everyone is affected by low self-esteem and low self confidence every once in a while. It’s when low self-esteem is ongoing, when low self confidence seems to be the norm that problems arise.

I work with all types of people. Clients come to me to help them using hypnosis and Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP in my San Diego office for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes those reasons revolve around low self confidence and esteem. Today I’d like to talk about how to build your self confidence and self-esteem and give you a couple of techniques that can help you gain confidence instantaneously.

The Problem With Low Self Esteem and Confidence

When low self esteem and confidence are the norm they can hold you back from reaching your dreams. They keep you from asking the world for what you really want, leaving you to receive only the scraps life tosses at you. I think it was Zig Ziglar that said, “Timid salespeople have skinny kids.” This is true, no matter what you do in life. If you are timid, if you lack the self confidence you need, you set up roadblocks that will continually hold you back, that will keep you from succeeding. But there are some simple strategies that can help you gain self confidence and improve your self esteem.

How to Build Your Self Confidence

So how do you how to build your self confidence? There are some simple strategies you can use. Strategies that can quickly remove your low self esteem and replace it with the confidence you need to succeed.

Use the following strategies to help you quickly re-build your self esteem and confidence.

1. Know Yourself

Lao Tzu once said, “Knowing others is wisdom, knowing yourself is enlightenment.” In order to build your self confidence you need to know and accept yourself. To get to know yourself better, do the following exercise:

a) Answer this question, “What would you dare to attempt if you knew it was impossible for you to fail?” I heard Dr. Robert Schuller ask this question a long time ago. What are your dreams? If you have difficulties answering that question then answer this one, “What did you dream about doing and becoming when you were a child? What have you always wanted to attempt?”

b) Write out a list of your talents. You say you have none? Then ask your friends and family what you’re good at. What of the many abilities that you possess have you received compliments on?

c) What are you excited about in your life right now? If you say you are not excited about anything what could you be excited about?

d) What’s great about your life? If you say nothing’s great, then what could be great in your life right now?

e) What would you like to improve in your life? Again if you say nothing then what might you improve? Once you identify this then what steps can you take to improve those areas? Do you need a coach, a mentor or a guide to make those shifts? Whose help could you enlist?

This is the initial steps you need to take to build your self confidence. Going through this process will help you become clear on who you are, what’s important to you, and where you’re headed. This will help you to feel more empowered and more in control of your destiny.

By uncovering these answers you are discovering your passions. Your passions will fuel your confidence. This is the deep inner confidence that will catapult you in the direction of your dreams

2. Fake it until you make it

I don’t remember where I first read this but it is one of the quickest ways to gain confidence. One of the best ways to build your self esteem is to pretend that you’re self confident already. It’s something used in Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP all the time, adapting or modeling the psychology and physiology of someone with the type of behaviors you would like to have.

I understand that this may seem silly at first, but as you begin to move your body and speak like you would if you were confident, you’ll quickly gain self-confidence. Here are some things to think about as you model confident behavior:

How fast does a confident person speak?

At what volume does he or she speak?

How does he or she gesture with their hands?

How fast does he or she walk?

How does he or she move their body?

How does he or she stand?

Once you figure out the answers to these questions, use your answers to pretend you’re confident. Start moving your body in confident ways. Your emotions will follow your body’s motion.

3. Model someone who’s already successful

As we talked about in number 2, modeling the behavior of someone who is already confident is an excellent method to gain confidence. Do you remember the last Superbowl? What did the New York Giants all have in common? It was the confidence that they could win, especially in the last minutes of the game. They understood what every winning team understands, confidence breeds success. They were confident in their ability to pull it out, to win, and they did.

The same goes for individuals who want to gain success. If you want to build your self-confidence, hang around with people who already possess self-confidence and model their success.

By the way, there is another way to build your self confidence. It’s call the trial and error method. This is when you do everything on your own and gain self confidence by accomplishing the things you set out to achieve. You are probably already using this method. It works great when things are going well but what happens when things don’t go so smoothly? An easier and better method, a way that also shortens your learning curve, is though a model or mentor. How do you choose a model or mentor?

Search out somebody who has already done what you are trying to accomplish. Approach them and ask if they would show you the ropes. Ask them how they arrived at their success and how they maintain it. Then ask them to show you how to do it and then follow their advice. It’s that simple. With a mentor, your chances of success increase dramatically.

You Can Break Out of the Low Self Confidence Trap

You can break out of the low self-esteem and low self confidence trap. Success is only a few steps from where you are today. Confidence in yourself and your abilities is within your reach. By applying these strategies you can make the shift you need to take you on the smooth path to success.

Each one of us has a lot to offer the world. Follow this strategy and it will take you on a path filled with self confidence and achievement. A path that allows you to give to the world, living a life filled with joy. That’s real success.

Would you like some things in your life to be different? Are you interested in making some shifts or changes in the direction you are now going? Would you like to experience a life transformation? People often call me requesting information about how hypnosis and NLP can help them transform their lives. They want to make changes or shifts in the direction their life is going. Today I’m going to give you a process you can use to naturally and easily make these shifts and create the life you desire.

The first thing to remember is that changing your life is possible. No matter where you are you are not stuck. Life transformation does require a few key ingredients though. These ingredients are a plan, patience, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.

How to Use this Information

The information you’re about to receive here has been used by many people, just like you, to make shifts, life transformations that have allowed them to live the life of their dreams. If you’ve really struggled with some things in your life then this method just might be able to help you too.

As you go through this process keep in mind that it can be helpful to start small. Achieving a few small successes will give you the confidence to move forward with larger ones.

If your life isn’t what you want it to be you can use this transformation process to make your life into the one you truly want to live.

7 Steps to Make Your Life Transformation Easy

Step 1 – Choose something you feel that will have a large impact on your life. Examine your life and think about the changes or shifts you would like to make. Now make a transformation list and order it from the most desirable change or shift to the least. Start at the top and examine your list. Stop when you find something you can change in a relatively short period, perhaps eight to twelve weeks.

Step 2 – Write out a specific goal. And don’t be timid, be bold! One of the major presuppositions in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is that people already possess most of what they need. This means that you’re far more capable than you think!

When setting your goals write out specifically what you intend to accomplish. For example if your goal involves increasing your income, instead of writing “I’m going to make more money” write ”On or before July 15th, I will have increased my income to $6,000 a month.” This type of goal setting is the only way your life will experience the type of transformation you are seeking.

Step 3 – Decide if anything has interfered with your goal. This is the only way you can do something about it so if you think that something has stopped you so far figure out what that something is. For example, is it a lack of knowledge of how to do it? Is it the fear of failure or even success? Capability is rarely the problem. Most likely you’ll find that fear or doubt is at the root of what has prevented you from aggressively taking action.

Step 4 – Address any issue you discovered in Step 3. The best way to address these issues is by deciding if they are real. We are hallucinating or creating things in our minds all the time. You like everyone else, respond to what you believe is real, rather than what is actually real. If you have been hallucinating a false idea then decide you are going to hallucinate something different and better for yourself.

If there is something real that has been stopping you up to this point, such as a lack of education, information or bad choices, they aren’t going to go away on their own. Make a plan to eliminate any of these types of challenges. Something simple like meditating daily on making different choices can help you over any hurdles you are facing.

Step 5 – Review your goal at least every day. Better yet carry a goal card with your and regularly review it. By regularly reading your goal you burn it into your subconscious mind. Continuing to reinforce your goal will maintain its priority in your mind. Look at it every day and read it aloud. Imagine accomplishing your goal. The tougher the goal, the more frequently you should reinforce it.

Step 6 – Decide on a course of action by breaking your goal into manageable bites. A question I like to ask is “How do you eat an elephant?” The answer of course is “One bite at a time.” A basic plan divided into a list of small steps, or daily activities to accomplish, can be your road map to success in achieving your goal. Big goals usually require a lot of action steps, but you can achieve them by following your map, one step at a time. Make a plan and work the plan.

Step 7 – Track your progress. This is why you write down your goal, so you can see how well you are doing. In order to stay motivated you need to regularly remind yourself of how well you are doing. How? By measuring your success.

For example, let’s say you have a money-related goal to come up with an extra $10,000 in three months. How much extra have you made so far? How much time is left until your deadline? This will let you know if you behind or ahead of schedule. Always know where you stand relative to the achievement of your goal.

Life Transformation Comes About When You Refuse to Give Up

Sometimes no matter how noble your pursuits and how hard you work you don’t just don’t achieve what you set out to accomplish. Remember, this doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Another of the major presuppositions in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is there no such thing as failure, there is only feedback. You learn something from everything you do. When you do something that doesn’t work decide to learn from it. Everything about human beings is designed to take this feedback and keep moving forward.

Everything is Not Going to Change Instantaneously

Transforming your life is a noble pursuit. It is also one of the most meaningful things you can do for yourself. But it’s not for the faint of heart or the quick to give up. Be patient with yourself and what you accomplish.

Finally, remember you’re not going to change everything overnight. Knock off a few of the easier items first. The confidence you gain will guide you through the tougher challenges. Combined with your persistence it will give you the life of your dreams.

“The more man meditates upon good thoughts the better will be his world and the world at large.” – Confucius

Confucius hit the nail on the head. If you continually think positive thoughts your world gets better. On the other hand if you are constantly thinking negative thoughts your life gets worse. This is because your thinking controls your focus. So instead of developing the world of your dreams, a negative focus actually attracts the things you don’t want into your life.

There are a number of different methods to help you change your focus. By drawing on techniques used in hypnosis and NLP, you can transform your thinking and your life. Instead of merely getting by, you’ll find that your life can truly be exceptional. By using positive thinking, you will teach your mind to focus on positive solutions rather than your challenges.

The problem with negative self talk and thinking

Negative self talk and thinking usually manifests themselves as worrying. Most people think that worrying is natural and somehow a good thing. In fact, if you are like most people you probably think that worrying about your situation helps in some way or another. You might think that since what you are worried about is on your mind you should be able to come up with a solution. The problem is that worrying doesn’t help you think clearly at all. In fact, it actually causes you to become more stressed and anxious and your mind to shut down.

How to develop positive thinking and self talk

One of the easiest methods of developing a positive outlook on life is to replace negative thinking with positive thinking. You can do this by changing your self talk, what you say to yourself on a regular basis. If you use the following strategy for a minimum of 3 weeks you’ll change the way you look at life.

1. Keep track of your thoughts

As you go through your day keep track of any negative self talk or thinking that pops into your head. As soon as you recognize any negative thoughts stop and immediately go to step 2.

2. Cancel your negative thinking

Once you recognize negative thinking or self talk cut it off in the moment by saying “cancel, cancel” out loud to yourself. You can reinforce this by adding some kind of physical movement such as rubbing your hands together as if you were wiping something off them, representing wiping your brain clear of those negative thoughts.

3. Decide to focus on solutions.

Once you’ve gone through step 2 think about possible solutions. When you’re faced with a negative thought (and, if you are like most people there will be many of them), the best response is to think to yourself, “How can I solve or improve this challenge?” The point is to immediately begin focusing on solutions. Why? Because you get answers to the questions you ask. When you ask a good question, you receive good answers. After doing this for a few weeks you will find you have taught your mind to think of solutions to your challenges instead of focusing on them.

Develop habits that empower you

Developing habits is a matter of practice. The problem is that once you develop a habit, positive or negative, it occurs automatically, without any thinking at all. In NLP and hypnosis we recognize this and that’s why we work on helping clients develop positive habits they choose rather than some of the negative habits they’ll fallen in to.

Most experts tell us that a habit will take a minimum of 21 days to develop. Since this is the case, if you want to develop new, positive habits you need to make a conscious commitment to change your thinking and self talk for that period of time. Don’t worry if you find yourself struggling to stay positive at first. It’s common to have numerous slips as you change your thinking and self talk habits. Refrain from beating yourself up over it. Remember, you’re focusing on solutions.

If you continue the process after the 21 days are completed, you’ll develop a permanent habit that will only require a minimal amount of maintenance on your part.

How to turn negative thoughts into positive thinking and self talk

As mentioned before, the questions you ask yourself will direct your thinking. If, for example, you constantly ask yourself, “Why do I always make that same mistake?” your mind will come up with all types of reasons you make that same mistake. On the other hand if you ask yourself, “What did I learn from this?” your mind will start to come up with things you’ve learned, things you can use to avoid the next time a similar event happens.

Questions to change your thinking

The following are some specific questions you can use to change a negative perception into something positive and can help you to start thinking positively on a consistent basis:

• What did I learn from ______? (whatever the learning experience is)

• What is great about this?

• What do I like the most about this?

• Who could I ask to help me with this?

Here are some questions you can ask yourself to keep your mind focused on the positive things in your life:

• What am I happy about right now in my life?

Note: I understand that you might say “I don’t have anything to be happy about”. When I ask a client this question in a hypnosis and NLP session and they tell me “I don’t have anything to be happy about” I’ll ask, “If you did have something to be happy about what might it be?’” You can use the same technique, asking yourself, “What might I be _____ of with all of these questions.

• What am grateful for in my life right now?

• What am I most proud of right now in my life?

• What am I most looking forward to in my life?

By asking these questions you are filling your mind with positive thoughts. This doesn’t allow any room for the negative stuff. Since you can only consciously think about one thing at a time, making the most out of the thoughts you allow in your mind only makes sense.

Your 1 month challenge

Although this system seems easy you’ll probably be surprised by how difficult it can be to give up negatively and develop consistent positive thinking and self talk. The change can only come through a committed effort.

James Allen once said, “He who would be useful, strong, and happy must cease to be a passive receptacle for the negative, beggarly, and impure streams of thought; and as a wise householder commands his servants and invites his guests, so must he learn to command his desires and to say, with authority, what thoughts he shall admit into the mansion of his soul.”

If you really give this system a try it can change your life. Try it for 1 month. Work at it every day. I believe you’ll be so amazed at the results that you’ll never want to go back to the old way of worrying and dwelling on the challenges in your life again. Use these simple strategies to develop positive thinking and self talk. You can start making your life more positive today.
