“If you’re not making mistakes, then you’re not doing anything. I’m positive that a doer makes mistakes.” – John Wooden

For nearly a decade as America’s #1 Mental Fitness Coach I’ve helped hundreds of people shift their focus and take control of their lives. I’ve done this using advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) or what I call Total Mind Therapy© in my San Diego office. Many of these people come to me because they say they feel inadequate. While everyone can feel inadequate every once in a while it’s when you continue to have that feeling of inadequacy that you begin to have a problem. Over long periods of time this can result in chronic stress and even depression.

Shift Your Focus on to What You Want

A race car driver once told me, “If you want to pass you need to focus on the gap, where you want your car to go. If you focus on the wall you’ll run into the wall. If you focus on the car beside you you’ll run into the car beside you. You need to focus on the gap.”

This is sage advice for your life as well. In order to get what you want in life you need to focus on what you want rather than on what you don’t want. You need to shift your focus so it takes you in the direction you want to go. It’s that simple.

7 Choices that Shift Your Focus and Help You Take Control of Your Life

1. Choose How to Live Your Life

Most people are constantly looking to others for guidance about how to live their lives. Stop letting others tell you what you can and can’t do. Just because your parents wanted you to be a doctor doesn’t mean you have to be a doctor. Maybe you really like being around sick people. Decide what it is you want to do with your life and allow yourself to go in that direction. Choose to believe in yourself and what to do in life.

2. Choose to Do Something You Are Good At

You and I, we all are good at something. Remember, I didn’t say perfect at, I said good at. Take an inventory of the things you are good at. You’ll probably find they are also the things you really like to do. Now that you know what you’re good at you can start to shift your focus in a direction that makes you feel good about you.

3. Choose to Believe in Yourself and Your Abilities

Some people have a hard time believing in themselves. They don’t feel they’ve accomplished much in their lives. If this is you, start by making a list of all the accomplishments you’ve ever done. Did you learn to ride a bicycle? Write it down. Did you graduate high school? Write it down. Did you spend time in the military service? Write it down. Did you ever receive an award? Write it down.

Once you’ve written down your accomplishments take a few minutes to read them out loud to yourself them every day. This will help you begin to shift your focus and start believing in yourself.

4. Choose to Have an Attitude of Gratitude

Everyone has things to be grateful for. Be grateful for the accomplishments you listed above. Be grateful for the things you already have in your life. Be grateful for the building that keeps the elements off of you and for the electricity to keep your computer humming and your lights on. I hallucinate (imagine) that you probably have enough to eat. Be grateful for that! You probably have a few people in your life that love and care for you. Be grateful for that too!

When you acknowledge and appreciate what you already have you are shifting your focus and choosing the kind of life you want to live.

5. Choose What You Say to Yourself

We constantly have an inner conversation with ourselves. This dialog is called self talk. You can choose either positive or negative self talk. Most people choose negative self talk. It’s only natural; it’s the way we’re all raised. Instead of noticing the things we do well we notice the things we don’t do so well. Then we start putting labels on ourselves like failure or loser. The problem with negative self talk is that it can make you feel very inadequate.

A basic tenant of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is there is no failure, only feedback. Just because you didn’t succeed at something doesn’t make you a failure. When you reframe the event as a learning experience it becomes something you can learn from rather than a failure. Just because you didn’t do well at something doesn’t mean that you’re a lousy human being or that you’ll never succeed. It just means you’ll have to choose to do things differently in the future.

If you find that you’re habitually using negative self talk, ask yourself if the message is really true. If it’s not then give yourself permission to have a “do over” and then use positive self talk to reframe your statement. Rinse and repeat several times a day.

6. Choose to Celebrate ALL of Your Accomplishments

Each day choose to celebrate your accomplishments no matter how small. Did you make it to work on time? Congratulate yourself. Did you finish your work today? Congratulate yourself. Did you make someone smile today? Congratulate yourself. Shift your focus by finding a few things that you did well each day and take pride in them. This choice will make you feel great!

7. Choose to Focus on What’s Really Important in Life

Most people focus on the small stuff. Choose not to sweat the small stuff and remember – it’s all small stuff.

When things aren’t going the way you want them to ask yourself this question, “What’s the worst thing that could happen?” After you figure that out then ask yourself, “Can I live with that?” I would imagine that in 99.9% of all cases you encounter the answer will be “yes”. When you learn how to put things into this kind of perspective you go a long way toward shifting your focus toward the life you want to live.

Starting Today Choose Where You Put Your Focus

Starting today, choose where you put your focus. Choose to accept yourself as you really are; a growing, evolving human being, one full of the seeds of greatness.

Use these seven choices to shift your focus to living the life you want to live. You deserve that life so start using them today

When people find out I’m theAmerica’s #1 Mental Fitness Coach they often ask how advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) can help them. My answer is they can help you take control of your life, almost instantly. That often gets me the “Huh?” response. I tell them you can use them to change how you experience the world and therefore take control of your life.

How to Use NLP to Take Control of Your Life

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) tells us that there are three factors in control of how the world appears to you. These are 1) your physiology or how you use your body, 2) your language patterns or the words you use to define the world and yourself and 3) your beliefs or the things people and events you focus on. If you shift any of these three factors you can instantly change how you experience the world.

How to Shift Your Physiology

Your physiology is the way you carry your body. In order to have certain feelings you use your body a certain way. You can call this a body pattern.

When you shift the way you use your body, the way you move, the way you breathe, your face, the way you talk you send different signals to your brain which shifts the way you think.

For example, when you feel down you hold your body a certain way. You might feel a heavy weight on your shoulders and tightness in your upper back or neck. Your head may be slumped forward and your shoulders might be curled downwards. This is the pattern you have for feeling down.

But you also have a pattern for feeling good. You probably sit up straight, your head is more erect, your shoulders are more relaxed, all of these contribute to your feeling up.

You know what’s funny? You can put your body into one of these positions any time you want, shifting the way the world appears to you. Now you are seeing the elephant in a different way.

How to Shift Your Language Patterns

What you tell yourself, also known as self talk, has a direct affect on how you experience the world. These are also known as language patterns. Most people consistently use negative self talk instead of positive self talk. Why? It’s because that’s what we’ve all been taught in school, at home and by the media. But you can learn to shift your language patterns almost instantly using positive daily affirmations.

What’s a positive affirmation? A positive affirmation is something positive you tell yourself over and over again, out loud. When I say my positive affirmations I also use my physiology to put my body into a receptive state.

For example, a positive affirmation I use every day is “I totally and unconditionally love and accept myself just the way I am!” I say this, and other positive affirmations out loud as I am getting ready to do my morning Yoga and Qigong practice. As I say them I put my body into a positive state by standing straight, breathing deeply, and waving my arms around. Yes, it might seem strange but it works. By the time I get going I am feeling great and ready to take on the world! By doing this instead of getting up and watching the news like many people do I have shifted my experience of the world to the one I have chosen instead of the one chosen by my environment.

How to Shift Your Focus

Do this exercise for a moment and don’t read the next paragraph until after you do it. Close your eyes and think of the color blue. Think of your favorite shade of blue, think of the blue ocean, the blue sky, the blue of a soft baby’s blanket. Now open your eyes and read the next paragraph.

Now look for the color red. What do you see? You see the color blue everywhere. Why? Because that’s what you’ve been focusing on!

How do you change your focus? By changing the questions you ask yourself.

Most people ask themselves all the wrong questions. For example, when they make a mistake or something doesn’t go the way they would have liked it to they ask, “What’s wrong with me?” That sets their focus. You see, when you give your brain a question it will focus on coming up with an answer. So when you ask “What’s wrong with me?” your brain will focus on all the things you believe are “wrong” with you.

On the other hand if you ask yourself a better question, a question like, “What could I have done differently?” or “What did I learn from this?” your brain will shift it’s perspective and focus on those answers. Again you are experiencing the elephant in a different way

Shift How You Experience Life and Reshape Your Future

One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is the gift of becoming more than who you are already. You are not your past, your past behaviors, or your past events. You are more than that.

The problem most people they try to drive in the future looking in their rear view mirror. What would happen if you drove around town looking in the rear view mirror? You’d crash into everything! That’s the same thing that happens when you try to live your life by telling yourself you are your past. In order to change how you go though life you have to shift how your experience it.

When you start to chose how you use these three factors you can shift the way you experience life, almost instantly. Isn’t it time you began to take control of your life

“Health is a state of complete harmony of the body, mind and spirit. When one is free from physical disabilities and mental distractions, the gates of the soul open.” – B.K.S. Iyengar

People ask me all the time how I have the energy to get so much done. Since I’m a health coach that uses advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) to help people improve their health I hallucinate (imagine) that they often think that I’ll tell them “All you have to do is come to my office (located in San Diego), go through a few sessions and you’ll feel great.” As much as I’d like to believe that was true, there’s a lot more to it than that. Just like everything else in life, in order to obtain optimum health and energy, conscious effort needs to be involved.

How Do You Increase Your Energy?

With the way life is, and all that you have to do it can be very difficult to stay energized all day. As a result you may reach for different energy boosters to get you through the afternoon. After all, when so much is expected of you, it’s seems natural to use a variety of substances to keep yourself pumped up.

For example, you might start with an innocent cup of coffee to give you a boost. After a while you realize that you need several cups just to get you going in the morning and then some more to keep you going throughout the day. Then, when you try to stop, you get plagued with awful headaches.

Okay, so you’ll stop drinking coffee. What about those energy drinks? The problem with most energy drinks is they are unnatural and can be addicting. Another problem is they’re usually packed with sugar or some kind of sugar substitute. When you drink the sugar filled ones you get that “sugar high”. Of course this is always followed by the inevitable crash. This kind of energy pick up is similar to a Sumo wrestler picking you up high in the air and then slamming you down to the ground. After you drink it you need something else to pick you up. This can turn into a frustrating cycle that repeats itself day after day.

How to Increase Your Energy Naturally

While advertisements make it appear as though those energy drinks and concoctions are an “easy” way to increase your energy, your best strategy is to naturally increase your energy levels. In this article we’ll look at 7 natural ways to increase energy. By incorporating some of these simple strategies into your daily routine, you’ll quickly notice that you’re waking up feeling energized and refreshed. Even more important is that it will be your natural energy that keeps you going, even on your busiest days.

Developing Your Optimum Health and Energy Plan

The following 7 steps will help you feel great and have plenty of energy all day long. By incorporating these tips into your daily life you can experience optimum health and live a longer, more fulfilling life.

1. Get plenty of sleep

Sleep is essential to having energy. Not getting enough sleep is a huge factor in having low energy levels. There was a time when I though that I didn’t need as much sleep as I did but I found myself reaching for energy drinks early in the afternoon to make up for it. While the necessary amount of sleep will be different from person to person, most people need 6-8 hours of sound sleep a night. Figure out what’s best for you and then get that much sleep every night.

2. Practice a morning exercise ritual

A great healthy habit is to have a morning exercise ritual. While getting up early to exercise might sound dreadful, it will make a tremendous difference in the amount of energy you have throughout your day. At first getting up a little earlier to exercise might seem difficult. You might feel tired in the morning and the idea of getting up even earlier and doing physical activity can seem downright insane. The first few mornings will be tough and you may even feel like giving up the idea altogether. Although it can difficult it’s important to force yourself. Habits, both good and bad, are hard to break.

What’s interesting is even if you go in kicking and screaming, it’s likely that within a week you’ll actually find yourself enjoying your morning ritual. You’ll find yourself craving movement in the morning because it fills you with so much more energy than a cup of coffee and a donut. This leads us to tips 3 and 4…

3. Practice Yoga

For years, my morning exercise ritual has incorporated Yoga into it. You see, Yoga is an all-natural energy booster that’s been around since ancient times. It also stretches your body with simple movements. Another advantage of Yoga is if you find you need an energy boost you can practice it any time of day. If you are unsure of what to do, find a Yoga class so you can learn the movements and practice them on your own. The great thing about a Yoga class is even if you enter a yoga session tense and stressed, you’ll exit feeling calm, relaxed, and energized. If there are no Yoga studios close by or you would like a lower cost option, buy a yoga DVD. These can be very helpful in getting you started.

4. Practice Tai Chi or Qigong (Chi Kung, or Chi Gung)

The other part of my morning ritual is practicing Qigong. Qigong is similar to Tai chi, a series of slow movements designed to keep your mind focused on your breathing. This calms your mind while giving your body a vigorous cardiovascular workout. Some people call this type of exercise “moving meditation”. Although seemingly slow and effortless, both Tai Chi and Qigong will give you a great workout and leave you feeling energized and awake. If you can, find a Qigong practitioner to teach you the basics in the beginning or buy a DVD to get you started.

5. Eat your breakfast

Many people have gotten in to the habit of skipping breakfast. But like your mom used to tell you, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Unfortunately, it’s the most popular one to skip. Maybe you think you’re not particularly hungry in the morning and that it’s better to skip this meal so you can eat more calories later. The problem with this habit is it plays havoc with both your metabolism and your energy levels.

The biggest problem with skipping breakfast is that it sends your body into a natural starvation mode. This is where your body consumes muscle mass and other vital tissues to continue its normal processes. On the other hand, when you eat breakfast, you receive a boost of energy that will help you feel more alert and energized. It also gives your body the necessary fuel it needs for the beginning your day.

6. Take herbal supplements

There a number of natural herbal supplements that can give you optimum energy and improve your overall health. You can add these herbs as ingredients in your foods or take them separately in supplement form. One popular choice is ginseng. It helps with many other things, such as brain function, while boosting your energy levels. Another energy boosting choice that also helps with brain function is Ginkgo. Cayennecan improve your heart health as well as helping with energy levels. As with any other drug, natural or synthetic, check with your doctor before using them, especially if you have other health issues.

7. Avoid fast energy foods

Your body needs carbohydrates to survive but there are good carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates. Good carbohydrates are also known as complex carbohydrates. These are carbohydrates like whole grains and legumes and contain longer chains of sugar molecules that take longer for your body to break down and use. They give you a long term, steady energy level.

Bad carbohydrates are also known as simple carbohydrates and are composed of simple-to-digest, basic sugars with little real value for your body. Since they break down quickly they can increase your energy initially but will cause you to crash in the end. Anything with a high sugar content will cause this roller coaster effect.

To keep your health and energy level at its optimum level shoot for eating complex carbohydrates that can help you maintain your energy throughout the day. You can also eat foods that are high in protein.

Putting Your Optimum Health Plan into Action

There you have it, 7 natural ways to increase energy and enjoy optimum health. If followed regularly, this optimum health plan will enable you to feel more energized throughout your day. If using all of these tips entails too much of a lifestyle change for you then simply add them one by one. Sooner than you think, you’ll be enjoying the benefits of an unending source of natural energy: YOU!

The man who waits for some seventh wave to toss him on dry land will find that the seventh wave is a long time a coming. You can commit no greater folly than to sit by the roadside until some one comes along and invites you to ride with him to wealth or influence.” – John B. Gough

Over the years I’ve talked with lots of clients and friends about how the powerful techniques of advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) can help you live the life of your dreams. I find that many people have very interesting expectations of these therapies. Some people think that that all they have to do is go through a few sessions and then – whamo – their life changes overnight, magically, with no effort of their own.

Well for those of you that think that all you have to do is to go to a few hypnosis and/or NLP sessions to completely change your life I’m here to inform you that this just isn’t true. Although these therapies can be very powerful for shifting your focus, advanced hypnotherapy and NLP are not substitutes for preparing your mind – and therefore your life – for success. You have to do a little work by deciding on the type of life you want to live and the steps necessary to achieve them. While advanced hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) can help you with this process it is no substitute for actually sitting down and using your conscious brain to decide what you’d like your life to be like.

Developing a Success Mindset

All experts that I’ve ever talked to or read all agree that your attitude is the most important factor for your success. This means developing a positive mindset. A positive mindset is like a magnet for success, attracting the things you want into your life. On the other hand, a negative mindset keeps you spinning your wheels, getting you nowhere or even causing your life to go backwards.

5 Steps for Developing a Rock Solid Positive Mental Attitude

Today we’re going to look at a few simple strategies you can use to motivate yourself and develop a rock solid positive mental attitude. Using these strategies you’ll be able to use your conscious and subconscious mind together to develop the type of positive mindset you need to achieve your goals and dreams.

Let’s take a look at the 5 steps you need to take for developing a rock solid positive attitude:

1. Write out your ultimate dreams

When you are doing what you were made to do life is a wonderful journey. If you are not, life can seem to be just tedious, hard work. When you write out your goals and dreams you develop a map to take you on that wonderful journey.

Let’s face it; nobody is motivated merely to pay their bills. All great achievers had a vision, a dream which guided them along their path to success. To do this you have to understand what inspires you and use it to jumpstart your motivation. When you know what you want you are inspired to maintain the drive necessary to overcome obstacles and find success.

Write out a list of your ultimate dreams. After you’ve done this ask yourself if what you are presently doing is taking you in that direction, are you on the right path? If you are, then keep at it.

If you don’t feel like you’re on the right path, perhaps it’s time for a change. Maybe there are deeper reasons why you’ve felt a lack of motivation. Get feedback; find someone to help you reflect on what these reasons might be. This is where hypnosis and NLP can be very beneficial. Once you’ve discovered your blocks you can then decide on how to overcome them so you can move in the direction of your goals. Now you have to…

2. Surround yourself with people who have a positive mental attitude

“He that lieth down with dogs shall rise up with fleas” – Benjamin Franklin in Poor Richard’s Almanack.[

What Ben was telling us was you are who you hang around with. When you hang around positive and inspiring people, you’re more likely to adopt a positive mindset and go for your goals with enthusiasm. Negative people, on the other hand, tend to make you negative also.

You might be saying, “I don’t have any choice I have to be around these people, at least until _____ “. If you must be around people that continually bring you down, do your best to avoid taking what they say to heart. If you can, try avoiding having conversations with them altogether. Deep in your heart you know that they are wrong. If you can’t avoid them, keep the peace as best as you can and then move on.

3. Take a leap of faith

Orison Swett Marden once said, “Believe with all of your heart that you will do what you were made to do.”

Just as you can never wait until the lights are all green to start on a journey, you also can’t wait until all conditions are right to start living the life of your dreams. The best way to develop a positive mental attitude is sometimes just jump right in. Don’t let fear prevent you from taking the first steps towards your goals and dreams. Keep in mind that it is the people who take action that find success. As you take action you’ll start to see the results of your efforts and your attitude will only improve. Remember that the difference between success and failure is the action you take or fail to take.

4. Keep focused on your goals

Sometimes I have clients who come to me and tell me that their life is miserable. Some of these people are quite wealthy and have great families. Why do they feel their life is miserable? It’s because of what they focus on.

Your focus plays an important role in your attitude. When you maintain a focus on what you want, the type of life, your goals, they drive you toward success. This also makes it easier to have a positive, optimistic mental attitude. On the other hand if you focus on the negatives in your life, it can lead you into being unmotivated and uncaring.

5. There is no failure – only feedback

“I have not failed 10,000 times. I have successfully found 10,000 ways that will not work.” – Thomas Edison

Many people believe if they make a mistake they’ve failed. But this simply isn’t true, in fact, a major presuppositions of NLP is the same as whatEdisontold us above, “There is no failure, only feedback.

Look you’re only human and you will make a mistake or two from time to time. When this happens ask yourself “What did I learn from this?” This will give you a solution focus instead of a problem focus, which is a lot more useful in achieving your goals.

You Can Motivate Yourself to Achieve Success

Using these tools will lead you to a positive successful life. Remember, a healthy positive attitude is a combination of inspiration, positive thinking and inner motivation. Put these strategies to work and watch your success soar!

1. Set your goal.

2. Monitor your results (feedback)

3. Adjust your behavior until you achieve your desired outcome

Like I mentioned in part one, I have clients who come to me looking for hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP to change their lives while having no idea of the result they are looking for. In order to get anything in life you have to set an outcome. That was part 1. Now let’s look at part 2.

Monitoring Your Results (feedback)

As Albert Einstein once said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” What I believe he was saying is that when things aren’t working the way you hoped they would you have to do something different. That’s what the steps monitoring your results and adjusting your behavior are all about.

It’s the only way anyone can reach their destination.

Since I live in San Diego I like to use this analogy. Let’s say you are flying from San Diego to Hawaii. Hawaii is your destination or outcome.

After your plane takes off and is in the air your pilot sets the plane’s controls on autopilot. Its job is to take you to Hawaii but as you fly toward Hawaii the headwinds blow your plane off course a degree or two. The plane’s GPS understands this and sends feedback to the plane’s autopilot.

This feedback helps the autopilot reset the plane’s course back onto the correct heading toHawaii. This automatic course correction happens constantly as you are traveling toward Hawaii. If it didn’t, you’d miss Hawaii completely and perhaps run out of fuel over the Pacific Ocean. That’s the importance of the autopilot monitoring your plane’s results.

The same goes for you and your goals. It doesn’t matter if you’re planning a trip fromSan DiegotoSan Franciscoor to graduate from college, you need to have a roadmap to your destination. You need to set your destination in your GPS system. That’s why you set goals; they give your system that destination. Goals work like an autopilot and GPS system to keep you moving in the direction you want to go in life. Once you are moving in the direction of your goal then you monitor your results to make sure you get to the right place.

Adjusting Your Behavior

Now that you’re on your way you take the feedback your GPS system is giving you and make corrections. Let’s say that your goal was to change your weight to 135 pounds. You start off doing well, and drop down from 158 to 150 pounds in a month. You’re stoked! Then you go 3 more weeks and find you are now at 151 pounds. What’s going on?

Well, in this case you need to first realize that you need to monitor more than just your weight. How much were you eating the first four weeks in comparison to the next three? How much exercise were you doing? If you are only monitoring your overall goal, that of obtaining the weight of 135 pounds, you might miss all those other indicators you need, like the calories you eat and burn, in order to reach your ideal body weight goal. So the lesson here is to know what type of feedback you need in order to reach your goal. Once you know all the measurements keeping track of your progress is easy. Knowing what helps keep your progress on track makes it easy to make adjustments. This is the same for any goal.

Your Subconscious Mind is Your GPS System

In most cases your subconscious mind works as your GPS system. This is because over the years you have programmed your subconscious to respond automatically in certain situations. This is actually a good thing in most cases because it let’s your conscious mind do all the reasoning work you need it to do. But sometimes your subconscious mind needs to be rewired. That’s where hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP can come in.

Using Hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP to Help You Shift Behaviors

If someone forgets to reprogram the GPS system of an airplane to the plane’s new destination you will end up in the wrong part of the world. While you or I might have a great deal of difficulty doing this, to an expert it’s a simple task. You could use a manual to help you but if you had an expert teach you how, you could do it quickly and easily.

The same goes for your own internal GPS system. There are times when you need to reprogram it with updated date. Now this can be fairly simple – if you know how. Using the tools like hypnotherapy and NLP you can make quick and lasting shifts in your behavior. While you can learn these from a book you can shortcut the time needed to make these shifts by finding an expert.

You Can Start Transforming Your Life Today!

You now have all the steps needed for setting and achieving any goal. All you have to do is put the system to use. While it may seem a little difficult at first, once you get used to it you’ll be able to make those shifts quickly and easily. Of course if you want to speed up your results you can get help from someone who has experience. They can make your trip a lot easier.

As a coach that helps people develop their potential I have had a number of clients that come to me wanting to change. So the first thing I do is ask them what they want. Many times they tell me some fuzzy thing that they want or what they don’t want. I have to explain that if they want shift to happen, neither of these approaches works.

Three Steps to Setting and Achieving Goals

Setting and achieving goals is actually simple if you follow three steps. These steps are:

1. Set your goal.

In NLP this is known as an outcome. To do this you need to have a clear idea of what you want.

2. Monitor your results (feedback)

Having a clear understanding what you are doing and the results you are getting as a result of your efforts. In NLP this is known as sensory acuity.

3. Adjust your behavior until you achieve your desired outcome

As you receive your results you need to be willing and able to change your behavior until you get the result (outcome) you are searching for. In NLP this is known as flexibility.

Today we’re going to talk about developing a well formed outcome.

5 Steps to a Well-formed Outcome

In order to get anything or go anywhere in life you have to have a direction or an outcome because if you don’t know where you’re going anywhere you end up is just fine. You also have to shape your outcome in a way that motivates you to achieve it. To do this you have to have what Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP calls a well formed outcome.

How to Achieve Your Goals

As I already pointed out, in order to quickly achieve your goals you need to create a well formed outcome. A well formed outcome is one that contains the following criteria:

1. Positive – Your goal has to be stated in the positive. Why? This is because your subconscious mind can only understand a negative by turning it into a positive.

For example, don’t think of an elephant. Whatever you do, don’t think of an elephant. Now close your eyes. What are you thinking of? An elephant of course. Your subconscious mind cannot not think of an elephant.

The same goes for any goal you set. Let’s say you are struggling with finances and they are stressing you out so you state your goal as “I’m not going to be stress out by my finances.”

What does your subconscious mind hear? “I’m going to be stressed out by my finances.” A better way to state your goal would be “I am approaching my finances in a calm and collected manner.”

Always ask yourself, “What is it that I really want?”

That leads us to number 2…

2. Personal – You have to be the active participant in achieving the goal. Your outcome has to be reasonably within your control. If your outcome is a primarily a result of other people’s efforts it is not well formed.

Here’s an example many people can relate to. Let’s say your spouse or significant other who you love dearly has a personality that you don’t appreciate so you approach them and tell them about it and then ask them to change their behavior. How does that work? We all know that this approach usually doesn’t work. Instead figure out what you need to do in order to draw out the response you are looking for.

Ask yourself “What will I do to achieve my outcome?”

Remember, your outcome or goal needs to be about you and your behavior, not someone else’s.

Now that you have established a personal goal it then you need to experience it in the…

3. Present – You need to experience your goal as if it’s already accomplished. You need to determine how you will know when you’ve achieved your goal. How will the achievement of that goal that look, feel and sound like? This gets your imagination in the attraction mode pulling your goals toward you.

For example if your goal is to get into shape and be slimmer what will that look, feel and sound like? Are you a certain weight, a certain pant or dress size or working out a certain number of times a week? What are people telling you about your appearance? How does that make you feel?

Ask yourself “How will this look, feel and sound like when I’ve accomplished my goal?”

Now to be sure this is a well formed goal you need to be sure that it is…

4. Specific – Your outcome has to be something specific, not fuzzy. For example, people when come to me and tell me “I want to be happy” my first question to them is, “What does being happy mean?” Most of the time they can’t explain what being happy means to them. This is a fuzzy goal

You goal needs to have a real and tangible outcome. Let’s say that you are unhappy with your work situation. You feel you are not getting paid enough and working too many hours. Instead of “I want to be happy” you would say “I want to work at a job that pays me $100,000 a year and that allows me to be home 3 nights a week and weekends and gives me 4 weeks of vacation that I use every year.” Now your subconscious mind understands what it is that you really want.

When you are developing a specific goal use the journalism model to create it. Ask questions that determine the who, what, when, where, and how of your outcome. This leads us to number 5…

5. Right-sized – Your outcome needs to be both large enough to motivate you as well as something that you can believe you can accomplish.

If you have a goal that is too large it can and will de-motivate you. Ask yourself “What is preventing me from doing this?” Once you figure the answer out write out your smaller, more doable goals.

For example, if your goal is to write a book, unless you’ve written a book before (and most times even if you have) this can seem like an overwhelming task. What you need to do is break the large outcome into smaller, more easily achievable tasks.

So in this case the large outcome of writing a book might be broken down into writing three pages a day or one chapter of 15 pages a week. These outcomes can seem very doable and will build up to accomplish your large goal.

On the other hand if the outcome is too small, like cleaning the garage, then ask yourself, “If I do this what will I get from it.” Now remember, as we discussed in number 2, this has to be about you. So if your significant other has asked you to clean up the garage you have to decide what you’ll get out of it, things like being able to find your stuff easier or being able to park your car without running them over.

So when setting your outcome, ask yourself, “Is this the right-sized outcome?”

That’s How to Set an Outcome

There you have it, the first step of how to achieve your goals. By using these 5 criteria for setting and achieving your well formed outcome or goals you are creating goals that will motivate you, goals you’ll want to achieve.

Next time we’ll talk about step number 2, monitoring your results.

I’m hallucinating (for me to hallucinate means to imagine) that sometimes things happen that result in you developing self doubt. I’m also hallucinating that when you doubt yourself your self-esteem and confidence suffer. That’s normal. Everyone is affected by low self-esteem and low self confidence every once in a while. It’s when low self-esteem is ongoing, when low self confidence seems to be the norm that problems arise.

I work with all types of people. Clients come to me to help them using hypnosis and Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP in my San Diego office for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes those reasons revolve around low self confidence and esteem. Today I’d like to talk about how to build your self confidence and self-esteem and give you a couple of techniques that can help you gain confidence instantaneously.

The Problem With Low Self Esteem and Confidence

When low self esteem and confidence are the norm they can hold you back from reaching your dreams. They keep you from asking the world for what you really want, leaving you to receive only the scraps life tosses at you. I think it was Zig Ziglar that said, “Timid salespeople have skinny kids.” This is true, no matter what you do in life. If you are timid, if you lack the self confidence you need, you set up roadblocks that will continually hold you back, that will keep you from succeeding. But there are some simple strategies that can help you gain self confidence and improve your self esteem.

How to Build Your Self Confidence

So how do you how to build your self confidence? There are some simple strategies you can use. Strategies that can quickly remove your low self esteem and replace it with the confidence you need to succeed.

Use the following strategies to help you quickly re-build your self esteem and confidence.

1. Know Yourself

Lao Tzu once said, “Knowing others is wisdom, knowing yourself is enlightenment.” In order to build your self confidence you need to know and accept yourself. To get to know yourself better, do the following exercise:

a) Answer this question, “What would you dare to attempt if you knew it was impossible for you to fail?” I heard Dr. Robert Schuller ask this question a long time ago. What are your dreams? If you have difficulties answering that question then answer this one, “What did you dream about doing and becoming when you were a child? What have you always wanted to attempt?”

b) Write out a list of your talents. You say you have none? Then ask your friends and family what you’re good at. What of the many abilities that you possess have you received compliments on?

c) What are you excited about in your life right now? If you say you are not excited about anything what could you be excited about?

d) What’s great about your life? If you say nothing’s great, then what could be great in your life right now?

e) What would you like to improve in your life? Again if you say nothing then what might you improve? Once you identify this then what steps can you take to improve those areas? Do you need a coach, a mentor or a guide to make those shifts? Whose help could you enlist?

This is the initial steps you need to take to build your self confidence. Going through this process will help you become clear on who you are, what’s important to you, and where you’re headed. This will help you to feel more empowered and more in control of your destiny.

By uncovering these answers you are discovering your passions. Your passions will fuel your confidence. This is the deep inner confidence that will catapult you in the direction of your dreams

2. Fake it until you make it

I don’t remember where I first read this but it is one of the quickest ways to gain confidence. One of the best ways to build your self esteem is to pretend that you’re self confident already. It’s something used in Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP all the time, adapting or modeling the psychology and physiology of someone with the type of behaviors you would like to have.

I understand that this may seem silly at first, but as you begin to move your body and speak like you would if you were confident, you’ll quickly gain self-confidence. Here are some things to think about as you model confident behavior:

How fast does a confident person speak?

At what volume does he or she speak?

How does he or she gesture with their hands?

How fast does he or she walk?

How does he or she move their body?

How does he or she stand?

Once you figure out the answers to these questions, use your answers to pretend you’re confident. Start moving your body in confident ways. Your emotions will follow your body’s motion.

3. Model someone who’s already successful

As we talked about in number 2, modeling the behavior of someone who is already confident is an excellent method to gain confidence. Do you remember the last Superbowl? What did the New York Giants all have in common? It was the confidence that they could win, especially in the last minutes of the game. They understood what every winning team understands, confidence breeds success. They were confident in their ability to pull it out, to win, and they did.

The same goes for individuals who want to gain success. If you want to build your self-confidence, hang around with people who already possess self-confidence and model their success.

By the way, there is another way to build your self confidence. It’s call the trial and error method. This is when you do everything on your own and gain self confidence by accomplishing the things you set out to achieve. You are probably already using this method. It works great when things are going well but what happens when things don’t go so smoothly? An easier and better method, a way that also shortens your learning curve, is though a model or mentor. How do you choose a model or mentor?

Search out somebody who has already done what you are trying to accomplish. Approach them and ask if they would show you the ropes. Ask them how they arrived at their success and how they maintain it. Then ask them to show you how to do it and then follow their advice. It’s that simple. With a mentor, your chances of success increase dramatically.

You Can Break Out of the Low Self Confidence Trap

You can break out of the low self-esteem and low self confidence trap. Success is only a few steps from where you are today. Confidence in yourself and your abilities is within your reach. By applying these strategies you can make the shift you need to take you on the smooth path to success.

Each one of us has a lot to offer the world. Follow this strategy and it will take you on a path filled with self confidence and achievement. A path that allows you to give to the world, living a life filled with joy. That’s real success.

“Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results.” - Willie Nelson, American country singer and philosopher

A negative thought from time to time is normal. Negative thinking becomes a problem when it becomes rooted in your subconscious mind. Then you are actually training your subconscious mind for failure, for things you don’t want.

When this happens you need to train your subconscious mind to think differently. You can do this by using techniques found in hypnosis and NLP. You can use the techniques in this article to banish negative thinking. You can use them to rewire your subconscious mind for success. These techniques include positive thinking, positive self talk and positive visualization.

What is negative thinking?

Negative thinking is when people are focused on not succeeding, on thoughts of failure. When people use this type of thinking they are actually using self hypnosis to program themselves to fail. Let’s look at an example.

In my martial arts schools I regularly held tests where I required students to break boards in order to be promoted to more advanced belt ranks. Most students would break the boards without any issues at all but some would find breaking the boards extremely difficult. When this happened I would take the student aside for a few moments and tell them that I knew that they could break the board. “Focus on the middle of the board and imagine your foot going through it” I would tell them. Then I would have them visualize breaking the board. After a minute of so I would have them try again. Almost always they would break the board.

Why couldn’t they break the board at first? They were hypnotizing themselves with negative thoughts, visualizing failure. They had told their subconscious mind that they were unable to break the board. They were actually training themselves to fail. As a result it was impossible to break the board. They had programmed themselves for failure.

Using the same type of visualization techniques used in hypnosis and NLP I had them shift their negative thinking into a positive belief about their ability to break the board. At the same time I had them use their subconscious mind to visualize success. Using these techniques they were teaching their subconscious mind that they could break the board. They believed they could so they were able to.

What is positive thinking?

Some people believe that positive thinking is merely telling yourself that good things are going to happen. That if you tell yourself something like “I’m good enough and smart enough so by golly I can do this” you’ll be able to achieve whatever it is you desire. But positive thinking is much more than that.

While positive thinking does require positive self talk, it also requires visualizing with certainty what you want to achieve as an accomplished fact, expecting to succeed. This type of pattern doesn’t always come easily but there are ways to program your subconscious mind for success, to develop a consistent pattern of positive thinking.

How to Stop Your Negative Thinking

While everyone experiences negative thinking every now and then, when your negative thoughts become persistent they can stop you from achieving success. It’s at this point that you need to change your habitual thinking patterns.

The following is an effective step-by-step process that uses techniques from hypnosis and NLP that will help you develop consistent positive thinking, training your subconscious mind for success.

1. Notice what you want to change.

Many time clients come to me with fuzzy requests. What I mean by this is they say they have an issue but they can’t quite describe what it is. They say something vague such as “I want to improve my ability to succeed,” but success means different things to different people. So the first thing I have them do is figure out what exactly it is they want to change.

To make this process easier to follow let’s take an example that you have made a mistake and, as a result, didn’t do well on a project at work. So your goal is to do a better job on work projects in the future.

2. Notice what you are asking yourself.

This mistake means you will have to redo a major portion of your work. As a result you might find yourself asking something like, “Why do I always do such dumb things?”

What’s funny about your subconscious mind is that when you ask it a question it will try it’s very best to come up with an answer. So when you ask it “Why do I always do such dumb things?” it will come up with examples of why you “always” do dumb things. You are actually showing your subconscious mind all the reasons why you cannot succeed.

3. Stop your negative thinking in the moment.

Once you notice your negative thinking cancel it in the moment. You can do this simply by telling yourself “cancel, cancel”. You can involve your other senses by clapping your hands while imagining the words “cancel, cancel” written on a large white board. Maybe you could imagine yourself naked jumping up and down on a big board with the words “cancel, cancel” written on it. The key here is to do whatever it takes to interrupt your negative thinking pattern.

4. Redirect your focus.

Now that you have cancelled your negative thoughts it’s time to change your focus. Why? You will achieve in life what you focus on.

What is focus? Focus is the direction your thoughts are taking you.

How do you control your focus? With the questions you ask yourself.

A better question than asking “Why do I always do such dumb things?” might be, “What’s not perfect yet?” or “What do I need to do in order to make this better?” or “What did I learn from this and how can I use it in the future.” These types of questions help your subconscious mind focus on finding solutions instead of dwelling on the problem. This trains your mind to focus on success.

5. Visualize a successful outcome.

Now that you have shifted your focus visualize a successful outcome. This image should include the sounds, smells, and physical sensations of that successful outcome as well.

Also, play around with the perspective. Most people find it helpful to view everything in the third person, as if they were spectators watching themselves in a movie. You may prefer imagining things from a first-person perspective, in which everything happens to you, as it would in everyday life. Try both of these perspectives to determine which works best for you.

Once you figure out what perspective is best for you paste that positive image clearly on the mental screen of your mind. You are now training it to go in the direction of success.

Some people find that they have difficulty with this step. If you find that you are having difficulty with this try engaging the help of a professional hypnotherapist or NLP practitioner. In most instances they can help you rapidly reprogram your subconscious mind for success. If you would like my help give me a call at (619) 293-3255.

6. Create a positive statement.

Now that you have your mind positively focused, visualizing success, replace your old negative self talk with something positive. For our example, good self talk might be, “My mind is quick and intelligent, I consistently come up with good solutions,” or something similar. Choose something that gets your mind even more focused in the direction you want to go in. Select a phrase that feels right to you.

7. Reinforce your habits with practice

Developing new habits take practice. Practice by using these steps every time your old, negative thought appears. You can teach your subconscious mind to respond positively. Practice develops the kind of habits you need for success.

Begin making these shifts today

You can use this process to overcome all types of negative patterns of thinking. By replacing your old thinking with positive thoughts and images you can begin making the types of shifts you want quickly and easily.

With that shift what might you attempt that you’ve always been too afraid to try before? As you systematically deal with all your old negative patterns, you’ll eventually find that you have very few left. Your subconscious mind will now be habitually looking for solutions instead of problems. Imagine how that can change your life. You can use this process to develop the courage to do just that.

Would you like some things in your life to be different? Are you interested in making some shifts or changes in the direction you are now going? Would you like to experience a life transformation? People often call me requesting information about how hypnosis and NLP can help them transform their lives. They want to make changes or shifts in the direction their life is going. Today I’m going to give you a process you can use to naturally and easily make these shifts and create the life you desire.

The first thing to remember is that changing your life is possible. No matter where you are you are not stuck. Life transformation does require a few key ingredients though. These ingredients are a plan, patience, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.

How to Use this Information

The information you’re about to receive here has been used by many people, just like you, to make shifts, life transformations that have allowed them to live the life of their dreams. If you’ve really struggled with some things in your life then this method just might be able to help you too.

As you go through this process keep in mind that it can be helpful to start small. Achieving a few small successes will give you the confidence to move forward with larger ones.

If your life isn’t what you want it to be you can use this transformation process to make your life into the one you truly want to live.

7 Steps to Make Your Life Transformation Easy

Step 1 – Choose something you feel that will have a large impact on your life. Examine your life and think about the changes or shifts you would like to make. Now make a transformation list and order it from the most desirable change or shift to the least. Start at the top and examine your list. Stop when you find something you can change in a relatively short period, perhaps eight to twelve weeks.

Step 2 – Write out a specific goal. And don’t be timid, be bold! One of the major presuppositions in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is that people already possess most of what they need. This means that you’re far more capable than you think!

When setting your goals write out specifically what you intend to accomplish. For example if your goal involves increasing your income, instead of writing “I’m going to make more money” write ”On or before July 15th, I will have increased my income to $6,000 a month.” This type of goal setting is the only way your life will experience the type of transformation you are seeking.

Step 3 – Decide if anything has interfered with your goal. This is the only way you can do something about it so if you think that something has stopped you so far figure out what that something is. For example, is it a lack of knowledge of how to do it? Is it the fear of failure or even success? Capability is rarely the problem. Most likely you’ll find that fear or doubt is at the root of what has prevented you from aggressively taking action.

Step 4 – Address any issue you discovered in Step 3. The best way to address these issues is by deciding if they are real. We are hallucinating or creating things in our minds all the time. You like everyone else, respond to what you believe is real, rather than what is actually real. If you have been hallucinating a false idea then decide you are going to hallucinate something different and better for yourself.

If there is something real that has been stopping you up to this point, such as a lack of education, information or bad choices, they aren’t going to go away on their own. Make a plan to eliminate any of these types of challenges. Something simple like meditating daily on making different choices can help you over any hurdles you are facing.

Step 5 – Review your goal at least every day. Better yet carry a goal card with your and regularly review it. By regularly reading your goal you burn it into your subconscious mind. Continuing to reinforce your goal will maintain its priority in your mind. Look at it every day and read it aloud. Imagine accomplishing your goal. The tougher the goal, the more frequently you should reinforce it.

Step 6 – Decide on a course of action by breaking your goal into manageable bites. A question I like to ask is “How do you eat an elephant?” The answer of course is “One bite at a time.” A basic plan divided into a list of small steps, or daily activities to accomplish, can be your road map to success in achieving your goal. Big goals usually require a lot of action steps, but you can achieve them by following your map, one step at a time. Make a plan and work the plan.

Step 7 – Track your progress. This is why you write down your goal, so you can see how well you are doing. In order to stay motivated you need to regularly remind yourself of how well you are doing. How? By measuring your success.

For example, let’s say you have a money-related goal to come up with an extra $10,000 in three months. How much extra have you made so far? How much time is left until your deadline? This will let you know if you behind or ahead of schedule. Always know where you stand relative to the achievement of your goal.

Life Transformation Comes About When You Refuse to Give Up

Sometimes no matter how noble your pursuits and how hard you work you don’t just don’t achieve what you set out to accomplish. Remember, this doesn’t mean you’ve failed. Another of the major presuppositions in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is there no such thing as failure, there is only feedback. You learn something from everything you do. When you do something that doesn’t work decide to learn from it. Everything about human beings is designed to take this feedback and keep moving forward.

Everything is Not Going to Change Instantaneously

Transforming your life is a noble pursuit. It is also one of the most meaningful things you can do for yourself. But it’s not for the faint of heart or the quick to give up. Be patient with yourself and what you accomplish.

Finally, remember you’re not going to change everything overnight. Knock off a few of the easier items first. The confidence you gain will guide you through the tougher challenges. Combined with your persistence it will give you the life of your dreams.

Now I’ve been practicing hypnotherapy for a lot longer than that, in fact when I owned and operated my martial arts schools I helped the students who trained with me excel using visualization techniques I’d learned from hypnosis.

I started learning about hypnosis when I was studying Psychology at the University of San Diego back in the early 80’s. Since then I’ve come to understand that hypnosis is one of the most effective catalysts for positive changes anyone can use.

The Positive Changes You Can Expect

Some of the positive changes you can experience using hypnosis involve changing habits. For example, you can, like many people, use hypnotherapy to help you lose weight permanently. In fact, hypnotherapy has been shown to be one of the most beneficial methods for reinforcing new exercise and dieting habits that need to be created for weight loss.

Millions of people have quit smoking using hypnosis. Over the past half dozen years or so I have helped hundreds of people quit smoking using hypnosis here in my office in San Diego. While it doesn’t work for everyone it is a very powerful way of helping smokers quit. Scientific studies have shown hypnosis to be one of the best ways to quit smoking.

If you bite your fingernails or drink too much alcohol hypnosis can be a great way to help you replace your old, non empowering habits with new, more empowering ones. You can also use it for emotional healing as a result of loss from a death or divorce or becoming more confident in meeting more of the type of people you are attracted to.

What I’ve found is that hypnosis can be used for hundreds of positive inner changes, nearly anything you can imagine. Hypnosis is a very powerful tool for helping you move from where you are to where you would like to be. Sooner or later almost everyone who is looking to make positive significant shifts and changes in their lives explores using hypnosis to some degree or another.

How to Get Started With Hypnotherapy

I don’t know about other hypnotists but I almost never see anyone without talking with them first. The reason is that I want to make sure that they are a good match for my system. This means almost everyone makes a complimentary phone appointment with me first. During their complimentary consultation, they often ask end by asking, “How do I start? Then they ask “How much does it cost?”

The answer to how do I start is easy, you merely make an appointment. The answer to how much does it cost depends on what you want to work on. If you live near or around San Diego call me at (800) 989-6570 to set up your complimentary, risk free session.

If I think you are a good match for what I do then we can schedule a session to help you on your journey. If I don’t think we are a match I know many local hypnotists and will gladly lead you toward one that might be more suitable for your particular issue or personality.

How Do I find a Hypnotherapist if I’m Not in San Diego?

People who are looking for a hypnotherapist but do not live in San Diegooften ask, “How do I find a good hypnotist?”

First, although I believe that one-on-one in-person sessions are the most powerful way to make a shift, you don’t have to be in the same room to have it work for you. I often have sessions with clients over the phone.

If you don’t live here and would like to experience one-on-one in-person sessions you can start by looking for practitioners in local spiritual directories. You might try checking out massage schools in your area. They often have a program for hypnosis or know of people who practice. If you do not find any leads there, I would suggest turning to the Internet.

How to Hypnotize Yourself

Another question I often receive is “How about self hypnosis recordings, are they effective?” My answer is if you want to learn how to hypnotize yourself self hypnosis recordings can be very helpful.

So how does self-hypnosis work? It really works in the same manner as using hypnotherapy you just do it yourself rather than using a hypnotist. Although there are many great books on self hypnosis I’ll give you some basics here.

Self Hypnosis Made Easy

First, relax and quiet your mind. One method I often recommend is using progressive relaxation techniques. This is when you relax one part of your body at a time. Once your body is relaxed you need to relax your mind. You can do this by counting down from 50 to zero while taking a breath or while thinking about what it is you want to change. It is when your mind is relaxed that your own hypnotic suggestion can travel through.

Before you go through the relaxation stage you need to pick a positive suggestion that is simple and gives you the changes you are looking for. Although hypnosis is powerful, vague statements are not so telling yourself, “I am now rich” won’t work because it is too broad and may be too difficult for you to accept at first. Using the suggestion, “I am increasing my income monthly by $1,000″ is more specific and may make more sense and meet with less resistance.

Repeat your suggestion quietly to yourself, over and over. Make the suggestion in the present tense, not the past or future. You cannot make anything happen at any other time.

Positive Changes Are Within Your Reach

Hypnosis is a very powerful tool to help you make significant shifts in your thinking. This can help you transform your future and your life. If you are interested in these types of shifts then why not give hypnotherapy a try? It has worked for hundreds of people just like you and it can work for you too.
