“All our dreams can come true – if we have the courage to pursue them.” – Walt Disney

As one of San Diego’s leading hypnotherapists and America’s #1 Mental Fitness Coach, clients often come to me complaining about their lack of motivation. This can be motivation in many areas, from earning more money to losing weight.

Some of these clients complain that they just “have” low motivation and they’ve had it much of their lives. Theses clients want to use Total Mind Therapy© to learn how to turn on their motivation. Other clients complain that they used to have high levels of motivation but they’ve lost it. These clients are seeking ways of increasing their motivation back to the levels they used to possess.

Using advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) I help these clients shift their focus so that it starts to pull them in the direction they desire, toward motivation and success. I usually teach them a strategy that, if followed, quickly helps them shift their focus toward success.

How to Increase Your Motivation

Some people seem to just naturally have more motivation than others. Since motivation and drive propel you forward toward the realization of your goals, if you feel you don’t have it, or have lost it, it’s important to learn ways to motivate yourself, to shift your focus so that you can start to achieve your goals and dreams.

If you feel like you have less of these traits than you’d like, the good news is there are simple ways to increase your motivation and happily start trekking down the path of achievement.

These suggestions take work and commitment and are not for the faint of heart, but if you really want to shift your focus and obtain the results you desire then follow them:

Here Are Five Simple Ways to Motivate Yourself;

1. Commit Yourself to Success

Napoleon Hill tells this story in his book, ‘Think and Grow Rich’,”A long while ago, a great warrior faced a situation which made it necessary for him to make a decision which insured his success on the battlefield. He was about to send his armies against a powerful foe, whose men outnumbered his own. He loaded his soldiers into boats, sailed to the enemy’s country, unloaded soldiers and equipment, then gave the order to burn the ships that had carried them. Addressing his men before the first battle, he said, “You see the boats going up in smoke. That means that we cannot leave these shores alive unless we win! We now have no choice–we win–or we perish! They won.”

I’m sure you’ve heard a variation of that story before. It says that in order to succeed in life you have to decide to burn your other options. If there’s an easy way out, most people will take it. You need to make failure painful.

For example, if you want to find another job or start your own business, don’t delay and procrastinate. Instead write a letter of resignation, postdate it a month, address it and then give it to a friend. Tell them to mail it in 30 days.

You’ll be surprised what you can accomplish once you’re committed to its accomplishment.

2. Shift Your Focus to the Positive People in Your Life

Choose to look for the positives in your life, especially positive people. If you don’t feel like you have enough positive people in your life then find some new people to hang out with. Then share your hopes and dreams with them.

Hang around with people with similar positive interests. For example, if you want to lose weight, join a gym, a Yoga class, or anywhere healthy people hang out. These people will be positive and supportive of your goals.

Ask around and find out who has lost a substantial amount of weight. It’s very likely, that there’s someone at the gym who has lost 100 lbs. That’s the person you want to associate with!

Shifting your focus to the positive also means getting negative people out of your life. If your friends don’t support your goals and dreams they’re not your friends anyway. Ditch them and replace them with positive ones.

Take an inventory of the people in your life. Add some who have what you want, and move on from the ones who aren’t supportive.

3. Nourish Your Mind with a Positive Diet

Our world has so many negative inputs. Decide to nourish your brain with positive information daily. Read inspirational books and listen to inspirational audio recordings. This may seem silly to many people, but the results are profound.

Just reading and listening are exercise for your mind. They will increase your motivation and drive. Like exercise for your body, you can’t work out just one time and expect to see significant results. The key is to do this every day. Set a schedule and stick to it. Even if you just do 15 minutes a day, the payoff will be huge.

4. Take Action Now

“It is not because things are difficult that we do not dare; it is because we do not dare that things are difficult.” – Seneca

What’s the difference between success and failure? It’s taking immediate and regular action toward your goals. Once you’ve set a new goal, do something now! Your first task can be as simple as making a phone call or laying out your plan of attack. The problem with waiting is, when you don’t take immediate action, you risk falling permanently into the paralysis of analysis mode. This is where there’s a lot of thinking, but nothing is actually happening.

Once you get into action your motivation will follow. Just making some progress can shift your focus and give you the inspiration you need.

When you have decided on what you want do something.

5. Wear the Appearance of Success

In order to succeed in life you have to believe that you can. One of the easiest ways to help you believe that you can is to look the part. Take a look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself, “Do I look like the kind of person that would accomplish the goal I’ve set for myself?”

For example, if your goal is to make $200,000 a year as a real estate investor, you might want to wear something besides an old Oakland Raiders t-shirt and ripped jean shorts. You need to look, and therefore feel the part that fits your goal.

Are You Ready to Take the Action You Need?

Are you truly committed to your goal? Are you focused on the positive? Are you ready to take action? If you’ll do these simple steps your drive and motivation will grow and take you to success.

Make the decision to take some action daily toward your goal. Remove the safety nets that allow you to fail too easily and allow yourself to step out and take a little risk. It might be a little scary at first but you’ll be amazed at the results.

I’m positive that a doer makes mistakes.” – John Wooden

For nearly a decade as America’s #1 Mental Fitness Coach I’ve helped hundreds of people shift their focus and take control of their lives. I’ve done this using advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) or what I call Total Mind Therapy© in my San Diego office. Many of these people come to me because they say they feel inadequate. While everyone can feel inadequate every once in a while it’s when you continue to have that feeling of inadequacy that you begin to have a problem. Over long periods of time this can result in chronic stress and even depression.

Shift Your Focus on to What You Want

A race car driver once told me, “If you want to pass you need to focus on the gap, where you want your car to go. If you focus on the wall you’ll run into the wall. If you focus on the car beside you you’ll run into the car beside you. You need to focus on the gap.”

This is sage advice for your life as well. In order to get what you want in life you need to focus on what you want rather than on what you don’t want. You need to shift your focus so it takes you in the direction you want to go. It’s that simple.

7 Choices that Shift Your Focus and Help You Take Control of Your Life

1. Choose How to Live Your Life

Most people are constantly looking to others for guidance about how to live their lives. Stop letting others tell you what you can and can’t do. Just because your parents wanted you to be a doctor doesn’t mean you have to be a doctor. Maybe you really like being around sick people. Decide what it is you want to do with your life and allow yourself to go in that direction. Choose to believe in yourself and what to do in life.

2. Choose to Do Something You Are Good At

You and I, we all are good at something. Remember, I didn’t say perfect at, I said good at. Take an inventory of the things you are good at. You’ll probably find they are also the things you really like to do. Now that you know what you’re good at you can start to shift your focus in a direction that makes you feel good about you.

3. Choose to Believe in Yourself and Your Abilities

Some people have a hard time believing in themselves. They don’t feel they’ve accomplished much in their lives. If this is you, start by making a list of all the accomplishments you’ve ever done. Did you learn to ride a bicycle? Write it down. Did you graduate high school? Write it down. Did you spend time in the military service? Write it down. Did you ever receive an award? Write it down.

Once you’ve written down your accomplishments take a few minutes to read them out loud to yourself them every day. This will help you begin to shift your focus and start believing in yourself.

4. Choose to Have an Attitude of Gratitude

Everyone has things to be grateful for. Be grateful for the accomplishments you listed above. Be grateful for the things you already have in your life. Be grateful for the building that keeps the elements off of you and for the electricity to keep your computer humming and your lights on. I hallucinate (imagine) that you probably have enough to eat. Be grateful for that! You probably have a few people in your life that love and care for you. Be grateful for that too!

When you acknowledge and appreciate what you already have you are shifting your focus and choosing the kind of life you want to live.

5. Choose What You Say to Yourself

We constantly have an inner conversation with ourselves. This dialog is called self talk. You can choose either positive or negative self talk. Most people choose negative self talk. It’s only natural; it’s the way we’re all raised. Instead of noticing the things we do well we notice the things we don’t do so well. Then we start putting labels on ourselves like failure or loser. The problem with negative self talk is that it can make you feel very inadequate.

A basic tenant of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is there is no failure, only feedback. Just because you didn’t succeed at something doesn’t make you a failure. When you reframe the event as a learning experience it becomes something you can learn from rather than a failure. Just because you didn’t do well at something doesn’t mean that you’re a lousy human being or that you’ll never succeed. It just means you’ll have to choose to do things differently in the future.

If you find that you’re habitually using negative self talk, ask yourself if the message is really true. If it’s not then give yourself permission to have a “do over” and then use positive self talk to reframe your statement. Rinse and repeat several times a day.

6. Choose to Celebrate ALL of Your Accomplishments

Each day choose to celebrate your accomplishments no matter how small. Did you make it to work on time? Congratulate yourself. Did you finish your work today? Congratulate yourself. Did you make someone smile today? Congratulate yourself. Shift your focus by finding a few things that you did well each day and take pride in them. This choice will make you feel great!

7. Choose to Focus on What’s Really Important in Life

Most people focus on the small stuff. Choose not to sweat the small stuff and remember – it’s all small stuff.

When things aren’t going the way you want them to ask yourself this question, “What’s the worst thing that could happen?” After you figure that out then ask yourself, “Can I live with that?” I would imagine that in 99.9% of all cases you encounter the answer will be “yes”. When you learn how to put things into this kind of perspective you go a long way toward shifting your focus toward the life you want to live.

Starting Today Choose Where You Put Your Focus

Starting today, choose where you put your focus. Choose to accept yourself as you really are; a growing, evolving human being, one full of the seeds of greatness.

Use these seven choices to shift your focus to living the life you want to live. You deserve that life so start using them today

“We shall have no better conditions in the future if we are satisfied with all those which we have at present” – Thomas Edison

When people find out I’m theAmerica’s #1 Mental Fitness Coach they often ask how advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) can help them. My answer is they can help you take control of your life, almost instantly. That often gets me the “Huh?” response. I tell them you can use them to change how you experience the world and therefore take control of your life.

How to Use NLP to Take Control of Your Life

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) tells us that there are three factors in control of how the world appears to you. These are 1) your physiology or how you use your body, 2) your language patterns or the words you use to define the world and yourself and 3) your beliefs or the things people and events you focus on. If you shift any of these three factors you can instantly change how you experience the world.

How to Shift Your Physiology

Your physiology is the way you carry your body. In order to have certain feelings you use your body a certain way. You can call this a body pattern.

When you shift the way you use your body, the way you move, the way you breathe, your face, the way you talk you send different signals to your brain which shifts the way you think.

For example, when you feel down you hold your body a certain way. You might feel a heavy weight on your shoulders and tightness in your upper back or neck. Your head may be slumped forward and your shoulders might be curled downwards. This is the pattern you have for feeling down.

But you also have a pattern for feeling good. You probably sit up straight, your head is more erect, your shoulders are more relaxed, all of these contribute to your feeling up.

You know what’s funny? You can put your body into one of these positions any time you want, shifting the way the world appears to you. Now you are seeing the elephant in a different way.

How to Shift Your Language Patterns

What you tell yourself, also known as self talk, has a direct affect on how you experience the world. These are also known as language patterns. Most people consistently use negative self talk instead of positive self talk. Why? It’s because that’s what we’ve all been taught in school, at home and by the media. But you can learn to shift your language patterns almost instantly using positive daily affirmations.

What’s a positive affirmation? A positive affirmation is something positive you tell yourself over and over again, out loud. When I say my positive affirmations I also use my physiology to put my body into a receptive state.

For example, a positive affirmation I use every day is “I totally and unconditionally love and accept myself just the way I am!” I say this, and other positive affirmations out loud as I am getting ready to do my morning Yoga and Qigong practice. As I say them I put my body into a positive state by standing straight, breathing deeply, and waving my arms around. Yes, it might seem strange but it works. By the time I get going I am feeling great and ready to take on the world! By doing this instead of getting up and watching the news like many people do I have shifted my experience of the world to the one I have chosen instead of the one chosen by my environment.

How to Shift Your Focus

Do this exercise for a moment and don’t read the next paragraph until after you do it. Close your eyes and think of the color blue. Think of your favorite shade of blue, think of the blue ocean, the blue sky, the blue of a soft baby’s blanket. Now open your eyes and read the next paragraph.

Now look for the color red. What do you see? You see the color blue everywhere. Why? Because that’s what you’ve been focusing on!

How do you change your focus? By changing the questions you ask yourself.

Most people ask themselves all the wrong questions. For example, when they make a mistake or something doesn’t go the way they would have liked it to they ask, “What’s wrong with me?” That sets their focus. You see, when you give your brain a question it will focus on coming up with an answer. So when you ask “What’s wrong with me?” your brain will focus on all the things you believe are “wrong” with you.

On the other hand if you ask yourself a better question, a question like, “What could I have done differently?” or “What did I learn from this?” your brain will shift it’s perspective and focus on those answers. Again you are experiencing the elephant in a different way

Shift How You Experience Life and Reshape Your Future

One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is the gift of becoming more than who you are already. You are not your past, your past behaviors, or your past events. You are more than that.

The problem most people they try to drive in the future looking in their rear view mirror. What would happen if you drove around town looking in the rear view mirror? You’d crash into everything! That’s the same thing that happens when you try to live your life by telling yourself you are your past. In order to change how you go though life you have to shift how your experience it.

Using advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) I can usually help them quickly break out of their comfort zone and get them back on the road to achievement.

The Six Blind Men and the Elephant

What I teach my clients is that in order to take control of your life you need to be able to quickly shift how you experience life. What does this mean? Let me tell you a story about six blind men that lived together in a village.

One day one of the children ran to tell them, “Hey, there is an elephant in the village.”

Since the six blind men had no idea what an elephant was or might appear like, they said to each other, “Let’s go touch the elephant and find out what an elephant is!” So with the child leading them they went to where the elephant was standing in the village.

The child led the blind men in a way that left them standing around the elephant. Each touched it from where they were standing.

The first blind man touched the elephant’s leg and said, “The elephant is like a pillar.”

The second blind man touched the tail and said, “No, it is like a strong rope.”

The third blind man touched the trunk of the elephant and exclaimed, “Oh, no! An elephant is like a thick branch of a tree.”

The fourth blind man touched the elephant’s ear and said, “An elephant is like a big hand fan.”

The fifth man touched the elephant’s belly and said, “No, an elephant is more like a huge wall.”

The sixth blind man touched the tusk and said, “You are all wrong! An elephant is like a solid pipe.”

Each knew that they were right so they began arguing about how the elephant appeared. Since each knew he was right they all began to become agitated and shout at each other.

The village wise man observed this for a little while and then he smiled and shouted, “Stop!”

Startled the blind men stopped arguing and the wise man asked, “What is the matter?”

One of the blind men said, “My friends are mistaken about what the elephant is like.”

The other blind men stated to protest when the wise men shouted “Stop! You are all right!”

“What?” a couple of the blind men exclaimed. Then one asked, “How can we all be right?”

In a soft voice the village wise man calmly explained, “Each of you is right because each one of you have touched different parts of the elephant. From where you are standing the elephant is actually as you described it.”

The wise man told the child who had led them to the elephant to move them to a place where another blind man stood. Each began to say how the elephant appeared when then wise man shouted “Stop” again. You need to wait until we are finished.” Then he had the child shift where the blind men stood four more times.

After their final move each exclaimed, “You are correct, we are all correct about how the elephant appeared,” and they all went away, led by the child, laughing.

It’s All about Shifting Your Perspective

We are all very much like the six blind men. If you only look at life from one perspective you will always experience the world in a similar manner. It’s only when you begin to shift the way you experience the world will the world appear different to you. Learning how to quickly shift your focus allows you to take back control of your life.

“Health is a state of complete harmony of the body, mind and spirit. When one is free from physical disabilities and mental distractions, the gates of the soul open.” – B.K.S. Iyengar

People ask me all the time how I have the energy to get so much done. Since I’m a health coach that uses advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) to help people improve their health I hallucinate (imagine) that they often think that I’ll tell them “All you have to do is come to my office (located in San Diego), go through a few sessions and you’ll feel great.” As much as I’d like to believe that was true, there’s a lot more to it than that. Just like everything else in life, in order to obtain optimum health and energy, conscious effort needs to be involved.

How Do You Increase Your Energy?

With the way life is, and all that you have to do it can be very difficult to stay energized all day. As a result you may reach for different energy boosters to get you through the afternoon. After all, when so much is expected of you, it’s seems natural to use a variety of substances to keep yourself pumped up.

For example, you might start with an innocent cup of coffee to give you a boost. After a while you realize that you need several cups just to get you going in the morning and then some more to keep you going throughout the day. Then, when you try to stop, you get plagued with awful headaches.

Okay, so you’ll stop drinking coffee. What about those energy drinks? The problem with most energy drinks is they are unnatural and can be addicting. Another problem is they’re usually packed with sugar or some kind of sugar substitute. When you drink the sugar filled ones you get that “sugar high”. Of course this is always followed by the inevitable crash. This kind of energy pick up is similar to a Sumo wrestler picking you up high in the air and then slamming you down to the ground. After you drink it you need something else to pick you up. This can turn into a frustrating cycle that repeats itself day after day.

How to Increase Your Energy Naturally

While advertisements make it appear as though those energy drinks and concoctions are an “easy” way to increase your energy, your best strategy is to naturally increase your energy levels. In this article we’ll look at 7 natural ways to increase energy. By incorporating some of these simple strategies into your daily routine, you’ll quickly notice that you’re waking up feeling energized and refreshed. Even more important is that it will be your natural energy that keeps you going, even on your busiest days.

Developing Your Optimum Health and Energy Plan

The following 7 steps will help you feel great and have plenty of energy all day long. By incorporating these tips into your daily life you can experience optimum health and live a longer, more fulfilling life.

1. Get plenty of sleep

Sleep is essential to having energy. Not getting enough sleep is a huge factor in having low energy levels. There was a time when I though that I didn’t need as much sleep as I did but I found myself reaching for energy drinks early in the afternoon to make up for it. While the necessary amount of sleep will be different from person to person, most people need 6-8 hours of sound sleep a night. Figure out what’s best for you and then get that much sleep every night.

2. Practice a morning exercise ritual

A great healthy habit is to have a morning exercise ritual. While getting up early to exercise might sound dreadful, it will make a tremendous difference in the amount of energy you have throughout your day. At first getting up a little earlier to exercise might seem difficult. You might feel tired in the morning and the idea of getting up even earlier and doing physical activity can seem downright insane. The first few mornings will be tough and you may even feel like giving up the idea altogether. Although it can difficult it’s important to force yourself. Habits, both good and bad, are hard to break.

What’s interesting is even if you go in kicking and screaming, it’s likely that within a week you’ll actually find yourself enjoying your morning ritual. You’ll find yourself craving movement in the morning because it fills you with so much more energy than a cup of coffee and a donut. This leads us to tips 3 and 4…

3. Practice Yoga

For years, my morning exercise ritual has incorporated Yoga into it. You see, Yoga is an all-natural energy booster that’s been around since ancient times. It also stretches your body with simple movements. Another advantage of Yoga is if you find you need an energy boost you can practice it any time of day. If you are unsure of what to do, find a Yoga class so you can learn the movements and practice them on your own. The great thing about a Yoga class is even if you enter a yoga session tense and stressed, you’ll exit feeling calm, relaxed, and energized. If there are no Yoga studios close by or you would like a lower cost option, buy a yoga DVD. These can be very helpful in getting you started.

4. Practice Tai Chi or Qigong (Chi Kung, or Chi Gung)

The other part of my morning ritual is practicing Qigong. Qigong is similar to Tai chi, a series of slow movements designed to keep your mind focused on your breathing. This calms your mind while giving your body a vigorous cardiovascular workout. Some people call this type of exercise “moving meditation”. Although seemingly slow and effortless, both Tai Chi and Qigong will give you a great workout and leave you feeling energized and awake. If you can, find a Qigong practitioner to teach you the basics in the beginning or buy a DVD to get you started.

5. Eat your breakfast

Many people have gotten in to the habit of skipping breakfast. But like your mom used to tell you, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Unfortunately, it’s the most popular one to skip. Maybe you think you’re not particularly hungry in the morning and that it’s better to skip this meal so you can eat more calories later. The problem with this habit is it plays havoc with both your metabolism and your energy levels.

The biggest problem with skipping breakfast is that it sends your body into a natural starvation mode. This is where your body consumes muscle mass and other vital tissues to continue its normal processes. On the other hand, when you eat breakfast, you receive a boost of energy that will help you feel more alert and energized. It also gives your body the necessary fuel it needs for the beginning your day.

6. Take herbal supplements

There a number of natural herbal supplements that can give you optimum energy and improve your overall health. You can add these herbs as ingredients in your foods or take them separately in supplement form. One popular choice is ginseng. It helps with many other things, such as brain function, while boosting your energy levels. Another energy boosting choice that also helps with brain function is Ginkgo. Cayennecan improve your heart health as well as helping with energy levels. As with any other drug, natural or synthetic, check with your doctor before using them, especially if you have other health issues.

7. Avoid fast energy foods

Your body needs carbohydrates to survive but there are good carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates. Good carbohydrates are also known as complex carbohydrates. These are carbohydrates like whole grains and legumes and contain longer chains of sugar molecules that take longer for your body to break down and use. They give you a long term, steady energy level.

Bad carbohydrates are also known as simple carbohydrates and are composed of simple-to-digest, basic sugars with little real value for your body. Since they break down quickly they can increase your energy initially but will cause you to crash in the end. Anything with a high sugar content will cause this roller coaster effect.

To keep your health and energy level at its optimum level shoot for eating complex carbohydrates that can help you maintain your energy throughout the day. You can also eat foods that are high in protein.

Putting Your Optimum Health Plan into Action

There you have it, 7 natural ways to increase energy and enjoy optimum health. If followed regularly, this optimum health plan will enable you to feel more energized throughout your day. If using all of these tips entails too much of a lifestyle change for you then simply add them one by one. Sooner than you think, you’ll be enjoying the benefits of an unending source of natural energy: YOU!

“If you want to succeed in the world must make your own opportunities as you go on. The man who waits for some seventh wave to toss him on dry land will find that the seventh wave is a long time a coming. You can commit no greater folly than to sit by the roadside until some one comes along and invites you to ride with him to wealth or influence.” – John B. Gough

Over the years I’ve talked with lots of clients and friends about how the powerful techniques of advanced hypnotherapy (hypnosis) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) can help you live the life of your dreams. I find that many people have very interesting expectations of these therapies. Some people think that that all they have to do is go through a few sessions and then – whamo – their life changes overnight, magically, with no effort of their own.

Well for those of you that think that all you have to do is to go to a few hypnosis and/or NLP sessions to completely change your life I’m here to inform you that this just isn’t true. Although these therapies can be very powerful for shifting your focus, advanced hypnotherapy and NLP are not substitutes for preparing your mind – and therefore your life – for success. You have to do a little work by deciding on the type of life you want to live and the steps necessary to achieve them. While advanced hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) can help you with this process it is no substitute for actually sitting down and using your conscious brain to decide what you’d like your life to be like.

Developing a Success Mindset

All experts that I’ve ever talked to or read all agree that your attitude is the most important factor for your success. This means developing a positive mindset. A positive mindset is like a magnet for success, attracting the things you want into your life. On the other hand, a negative mindset keeps you spinning your wheels, getting you nowhere or even causing your life to go backwards.

5 Steps for Developing a Rock Solid Positive Mental Attitude

Today we’re going to look at a few simple strategies you can use to motivate yourself and develop a rock solid positive mental attitude. Using these strategies you’ll be able to use your conscious and subconscious mind together to develop the type of positive mindset you need to achieve your goals and dreams.

Let’s take a look at the 5 steps you need to take for developing a rock solid positive attitude:

1. Write out your ultimate dreams

When you are doing what you were made to do life is a wonderful journey. If you are not, life can seem to be just tedious, hard work. When you write out your goals and dreams you develop a map to take you on that wonderful journey.

Let’s face it; nobody is motivated merely to pay their bills. All great achievers had a vision, a dream which guided them along their path to success. To do this you have to understand what inspires you and use it to jumpstart your motivation. When you know what you want you are inspired to maintain the drive necessary to overcome obstacles and find success.

Write out a list of your ultimate dreams. After you’ve done this ask yourself if what you are presently doing is taking you in that direction, are you on the right path? If you are, then keep at it.

If you don’t feel like you’re on the right path, perhaps it’s time for a change. Maybe there are deeper reasons why you’ve felt a lack of motivation. Get feedback; find someone to help you reflect on what these reasons might be. This is where hypnosis and NLP can be very beneficial. Once you’ve discovered your blocks you can then decide on how to overcome them so you can move in the direction of your goals. Now you have to…

2. Surround yourself with people who have a positive mental attitude

“He that lieth down with dogs shall rise up with fleas” – Benjamin Franklin in Poor Richard’s Almanack.[

What Ben was telling us was you are who you hang around with. When you hang around positive and inspiring people, you’re more likely to adopt a positive mindset and go for your goals with enthusiasm. Negative people, on the other hand, tend to make you negative also.

You might be saying, “I don’t have any choice I have to be around these people, at least until _____ “. If you must be around people that continually bring you down, do your best to avoid taking what they say to heart. If you can, try avoiding having conversations with them altogether. Deep in your heart you know that they are wrong. If you can’t avoid them, keep the peace as best as you can and then move on.

3. Take a leap of faith

Orison Swett Marden once said, “Believe with all of your heart that you will do what you were made to do.”

Just as you can never wait until the lights are all green to start on a journey, you also can’t wait until all conditions are right to start living the life of your dreams. The best way to develop a positive mental attitude is sometimes just jump right in. Don’t let fear prevent you from taking the first steps towards your goals and dreams. Keep in mind that it is the people who take action that find success. As you take action you’ll start to see the results of your efforts and your attitude will only improve. Remember that the difference between success and failure is the action you take or fail to take.

4. Keep focused on your goals

Sometimes I have clients who come to me and tell me that their life is miserable. Some of these people are quite wealthy and have great families. Why do they feel their life is miserable? It’s because of what they focus on.

Your focus plays an important role in your attitude. When you maintain a focus on what you want, the type of life, your goals, they drive you toward success. This also makes it easier to have a positive, optimistic mental attitude. On the other hand if you focus on the negatives in your life, it can lead you into being unmotivated and uncaring.

5. There is no failure – only feedback

“I have not failed 10,000 times. I have successfully found 10,000 ways that will not work.” – Thomas Edison

Many people believe if they make a mistake they’ve failed. But this simply isn’t true, in fact, a major presuppositions of NLP is the same as whatEdisontold us above, “There is no failure, only feedback.

Look you’re only human and you will make a mistake or two from time to time. When this happens ask yourself “What did I learn from this?” This will give you a solution focus instead of a problem focus, which is a lot more useful in achieving your goals.

You Can Motivate Yourself to Achieve Success

Using these tools will lead you to a positive successful life. Remember, a healthy positive attitude is a combination of inspiration, positive thinking and inner motivation. Put these strategies to work and watch your success soar!

People often ask me what I do. When I tell them that I am a hypnotherapist and NLP practitioner with an office in San Diego, they often ask, “What can hypnosis do for me? How can hypnosis or NLP help me?” Usually I tell them that hypnosis and NLP can help them make quick and significant shifts in their thinking.

What types of shifts? Hypnosis and NLP can help you overcome fears, pains, stresses and anxieties. They can help you break bad habits like smoking and develop good ones like exercising. They can help reduce the symptoms of some diseases. Hypnosis and NLP can help you think differently so that you can eliminate your mental blocks to success while encouraging you to take successful actions you may have avoided in the past.

In short, hypnosis can help catapult you into living the life you desire!

7 Benefits of Hypnosis and NLP

In this article I’d like to explore 7 benefits you can receive from hypnosis and NLP. Let’s dig in.

1. Reduce your pain

Do you have a physical condition that causes you a lot of pain, such as back or shoulder injury? Are you, like millions of other Americans suffering adverse side effects from your pain medications? Using hypnosis and NLP you can reduce or actually eliminate your pain.

Many doctors have been exposed to hypnosis for pain management. Ask your doctor about using self-hypnosis as part of your pain therapy. There are a growing number of doctors and physical therapists that recommend this over taking drugs for effective pain control. Hypnosis can even help you with the pain of severe injuries so that your body can heal quicker, again without the side effects of drugs.

If you’re contemplating surgery, ask your doctor to recommend an anesthesiologist who uses hypnosis instead of drugs. Hypnosis has been accepted by the American Medical Association as a viable anesthetic during surgery for over 50 years. Many dentists use it instead of anesthesia. Also, if you’re expecting, learn how you can use hypnosis for childbirth and avoid potentially hazardous side effects of drug anesthesia.

2. Overcome fears and anxieties

One of the most profound uses of especially NLP is helping people overcome their fears. Perhaps you have a fear of flying or you’re nervous about speaking in public. These types of fears can affect many aspects of your life and career. Many fears can even result in nightmares, but you can free yourself of these with hypnosis and NLP. Many times one or two sessions can help you eliminate your fears completely.

3. Eliminate bad habits

Do you smoke, overeat, bite your nails or just put things off all the time? Using hypnosis and NLP you can develop better eating and exercise habits so you can lose weight and keep it off, stop biting your fingernails, and avoid procrastination altogether. Many people have gotten rid of their pesky habits by using hypnosis and so can you.

4. Sail past mental blocks and on to success

Have you ever seen a runner who does very well but when the big race comes they pull up lame? The fear of success can do that to almost anyone. If you find that you’re always coming up just short of success in every endeavor then hypnosis and NLP can help you overcome it and succeed. You can discover your mental blocks to success and stop them using hypnosis and NLP.

5. Get rid of your stress

Has too much stress bogged you down lately? Stress affects everyone and can cause serious health issues. One of the most common things many of my clients say to me after their first hypnosis session is “I haven’t felt that relaxed in years.” The reason is they haven’t allowed themselves to relax. Hypnosis and NLP are both great ways to relieve stress. A hypnosis session can help your mind deal with stress in positive ways so you feel refreshed, energetic, and healthy again.

6. Conquer your addictions

Do you have an addiction to nicotine, caffeine, sugar, soda, or more serious drugs? One of the biggest reasons people come to me is to help them quit smoking. I have also helped many people deal with other addictions such as to alcohol and other recreational drugs. Hypnosis and NLP are effective tools in helping overcoming addictions so you can take back control of your life – permanently.

7. Find your lost memories

I have had clients who have needed to remember where they have left important documents or wanted to remember a person from their past. If you’re unable to remember something of great importance, there is a chance that a traumatic experience has blocked your access to it. In these cases a hypnosis session can be very helpful; it will help you access your subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind is where those memories have been stored, and a relaxing hypnosis session can be your key to unlock them.

Are There Any Negatives to Hypnosis?

Hypnosis and NLP are not cure alls. They cannot make anyone do anything they don’t want to do. The biggest problem you may encounter with hypnosis is you have to want the desired change to occur in order to enjoy permanent results. For example, do you really want to quit smoking? If you don’t, then even hypnosis and NLP won’t work to stop your addiction.

Remember, with hypnosis, you’re still awake and in control. No one can make you do anything you don’t want to do! So if you find that you are lukewarm or you want to change because someone else wants you to change its best you wait. These are the times when you will want to work on increasing your desire for the change you’re trying to effect before you use hypnosis and NLP to help you make the change.

In Part 1 of “How to Transform Your Life” we looked at the 3 steps to setting and achieving goals:

1. Set your goal.

2. Monitor your results (feedback)

3. Adjust your behavior until you achieve your desired outcome

Like I mentioned in part one, I have clients who come to me looking for hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP to change their lives while having no idea of the result they are looking for. In order to get anything in life you have to set an outcome. That was part 1. Now let’s look at part 2.

Monitoring Your Results (feedback)

As Albert Einstein once said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” What I believe he was saying is that when things aren’t working the way you hoped they would you have to do something different. That’s what the steps monitoring your results and adjusting your behavior are all about.

It’s the only way anyone can reach their destination.

Since I live in San Diego I like to use this analogy. Let’s say you are flying from San Diego to Hawaii. Hawaii is your destination or outcome.

After your plane takes off and is in the air your pilot sets the plane’s controls on autopilot. Its job is to take you to Hawaii but as you fly toward Hawaii the headwinds blow your plane off course a degree or two. The plane’s GPS understands this and sends feedback to the plane’s autopilot.

This feedback helps the autopilot reset the plane’s course back onto the correct heading toHawaii. This automatic course correction happens constantly as you are traveling toward Hawaii. If it didn’t, you’d miss Hawaii completely and perhaps run out of fuel over the Pacific Ocean. That’s the importance of the autopilot monitoring your plane’s results.

The same goes for you and your goals. It doesn’t matter if you’re planning a trip fromSan DiegotoSan Franciscoor to graduate from college, you need to have a roadmap to your destination. You need to set your destination in your GPS system. That’s why you set goals; they give your system that destination. Goals work like an autopilot and GPS system to keep you moving in the direction you want to go in life. Once you are moving in the direction of your goal then you monitor your results to make sure you get to the right place.

Adjusting Your Behavior

Now that you’re on your way you take the feedback your GPS system is giving you and make corrections. Let’s say that your goal was to change your weight to 135 pounds. You start off doing well, and drop down from 158 to 150 pounds in a month. You’re stoked! Then you go 3 more weeks and find you are now at 151 pounds. What’s going on?

Well, in this case you need to first realize that you need to monitor more than just your weight. How much were you eating the first four weeks in comparison to the next three? How much exercise were you doing? If you are only monitoring your overall goal, that of obtaining the weight of 135 pounds, you might miss all those other indicators you need, like the calories you eat and burn, in order to reach your ideal body weight goal. So the lesson here is to know what type of feedback you need in order to reach your goal. Once you know all the measurements keeping track of your progress is easy. Knowing what helps keep your progress on track makes it easy to make adjustments. This is the same for any goal.

Your Subconscious Mind is Your GPS System

In most cases your subconscious mind works as your GPS system. This is because over the years you have programmed your subconscious to respond automatically in certain situations. This is actually a good thing in most cases because it let’s your conscious mind do all the reasoning work you need it to do. But sometimes your subconscious mind needs to be rewired. That’s where hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP can come in.

Using Hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP to Help You Shift Behaviors

If someone forgets to reprogram the GPS system of an airplane to the plane’s new destination you will end up in the wrong part of the world. While you or I might have a great deal of difficulty doing this, to an expert it’s a simple task. You could use a manual to help you but if you had an expert teach you how, you could do it quickly and easily.

The same goes for your own internal GPS system. There are times when you need to reprogram it with updated date. Now this can be fairly simple – if you know how. Using the tools like hypnotherapy and NLP you can make quick and lasting shifts in your behavior. While you can learn these from a book you can shortcut the time needed to make these shifts by finding an expert.

You Can Start Transforming Your Life Today!

You now have all the steps needed for setting and achieving any goal. All you have to do is put the system to use. While it may seem a little difficult at first, once you get used to it you’ll be able to make those shifts quickly and easily. Of course if you want to speed up your results you can get help from someone who has experience. They can make your trip a lot easier.

“In [hypnosis], you can attain significant psycho-physiologic changes.” Dr. Daniel Handel, National Institute of Health, New York Times, June 2002

Because most people have a limited exposure to hypnosis they also have a limited understanding about how hypnosis works. Over the years I have helped hundreds of people using hypnosis and NLP make quick and lasting shifts in behavior in mySan Diegooffice. During that same time I have kept track of the most commonly asked questions I get about both hypnosis and NLP. In this article I’ll explore the most frequently asked questions I get about hypnosis.

The 7 most frequently asked questions I get about hypnosis:

Question 1: I tried to be hypnotized at a hypnosis show and it didn’t work. What if you can’t hypnotize me?

Almost every normal person in the word is hypnotizable As long as you have at least an IQ of 70 and no severe mental disorders this should include you. In all my hypnosis sessions in my San Diego office and my travels around the country, every person I have attempted to hypnotize has been hypnotized. That being said all of these people wanted to be hypnotized. The same goes for those people in a hypnosis “show”. They were hypnotized because they wanted to be. I have never hypnotized nor seen anyone hypnotized who didn’t want to be hypnotized.

Statistical note: People have a wide variety of hypnotic susceptibility and, like most things the ability to be hypnotized is normally distributed. In layperson’s terms this means about seventy percent of all people are moderately susceptible and five to ten percent are either highly susceptible or not susceptible at all.

Question 2: What does it feel like when I am hypnotized? How will I know that I have been hypnotized?

I know, this is actually two questions but it really covers the same thing. The fact is most people can’t tell the difference between being in the state of hypnosis and a normal waking state. While experiencing a hypnotic state you do not get ‘knocked out” or “fall asleep”. If hypnosis “feels” like anything it feels more like daydreaming or that not quite asleep, not quite awake state you feel right before you wake up or fall asleep. While ‘in hypnosis’ you are at all times conscious and aware and in control of what is happening to you. Some people report feeling relaxed and lethargic, while others report feeling light. There is no one way that people experience a hypnotic state. One thing most people have in common is a seemingly explicable positive change in their behaviors.

Question 3: Is hypnosis really safe?

According to an August 2004 article in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, “Hypnosis and guided imagery have no adverse side effects”. While movies and television shows continue to spread the myth that hypnosis can be harmful, there is no evidence that hypnosis has ever harmed anyone. The reason for this is while you are in a hypnotic sate you are not under anyone’s control but your own (see below).

The bottom line is this; hypnosis is a safe, relaxing and enjoyable experience.

Question 4: What is the science behind hypnosis? How does hypnosis work?

According to Dr. David Spiegel, psychiatry professor and medical director of the Complementary Medicine Clinic atStanfordUniversity, hypnosis works “because the patients are in an altered state, solely focused on the message, soaking it up, rather than in a psychological mode in which they can trivialize or ignore it.”

You mind works on two levels, the conscious and the subconscious. You make decisions, think, and act with your conscious mind. Your subconscious mind controls your habits, the things you do automatically every day, like brushing your teeth or putting on your clothes. Usually the subconscious learns over a period of time, through repetition. Hypnosis relaxes your conscious mind. In this relaxed state you can communicate directly with your subconscious. This is why you can use hypnosis to make quick and easy shifts in lifelong behaviors.

Question 5: What kind of things can hypnosis help me do?

In a February 2004 article, Better Homes and Gardens reported, “Today, hypnosis–or hypnotherapy–is becoming a respected alternative for an array of conditions. It has long been used to help people quit smoking and overcome fears, such as the fear of public speaking, but now the practice is branching out into new areas.”

How can hypnosis do this? It’s because all your habits are controlled by your subconscious mind. Since both hypnosis and NLP work directly with your subconscious mind they can help you make behavioral shifts more quickly and easily that just about any other method.

Question 6: Can the hypnotherapist control me?

While in a hypnotic state you are aware of yourself and everything around you. You are completely in control. You can terminate the session at any time. Hypnosis is not sleep, nor can you get stuck in a state of hypnosis. If you are in a hypnotic trance and the hypnotist dropped dead after inducing the trance you would either come out of hypnosis by yourself or drift off to sleep and then wake up later. You can’t be made to do something against your will! People who are hypnotized are not mindless robots that can be totally manipulated by the hypnotist. You maintain control over your behavior and can refuse to comply with any suggestions given to you that are in direct moral conflict with them.

Question 7: Why do some people think that you go to sleep in hypnosis?

Hypnosis has been confused for sleep because of its superficial features. It has been shown in laboratory a brain wave pattern studies that, in reality, hypnosis does not resemble sleep. In an April 2004 article, Dr. L. Dean Hoover, a psychiatrist said, “The word hypnosis comes from the Greek word for sleep, but actually, you are not asleep, you are focused and have more self-control. Researchers have done EEGs of persons in trances that showed their brains were highly alert and focused.” A person in a hypnotic state is usually quite relaxed but is also quite alert, and focused.

There you have it; the answers to the most commonly asked questions I get about hypnosis. If you have other questions just put your comments on this page.

Although hypnosis or hypnotherapy has been used successfully in medicine, sports, dentistry, personal development, education and many other areas, there continue to be a number of common misconceptions about what hypnosis is and what it can and can’t do. As a hypnotherapist that uses both hypnosis and Neuro Linguistic Programming or NLP to help my clients make quick and permanent shifts in their behaviors, I get many people who come into my San Diego office with some very interesting ideas about what hypnosis can and cannot do. In this article I’d like to explore some of the most common misconceptions and give you the answers about them based on what my experience has taught me.

Let’s look at the most common misconceptions about hypnosis:

1) The hypnotist can make you do things you don’t want to do.

This common misconception about hypnosis is a result of the entertainment industry. Most people that come into my San Diego office with this misconception have this idea as a result of either watching a hypnosis show in person or seeing a television show where people seem to be ‘controlled’ by the hypnotist.

While these hypnotists make it seem that they have these people under their control if a hypnotist could actually control other people I imagine that we would hear of more cases where a not-so-good hypnotist was found trying to rob a bank using hypnosis or taking other types of advantage of people. This simply can’t happen. The facts are even though hypnosis can be used to allow people to let down some of their conscious defenses and act childlike on a stage, your subconscious mind will not respond to suggestions that are against your most deeply held moral beliefs. Any attempt to force you to do something against your strongly held beliefs would cause you to immediately come out of the hypnotic state.

For example, if a hypnotist would try to suggest that you do something that your subconscious mind felt was inappropriate, such as taking off all your clothes and running around naked on stage and you, like most people, felt that this was inappropriate behavior, your subconscious mind would immediately allow your conscious mind to take back control. You would then come out of the hypnotic state and slap the hypnotist for making such an inappropriate suggestion.

Here’s the long and short of it, under hypnosis you will not do anything that you normally wouldn’t do in your normal conscious state.

2) Hypnosis Knocks You Out and Makes You Become Unconscious

Here is another misconception about hypnosis that I hear all the time. I hear hypnosis knocks you out and makes you fall asleep. Again this is caused by the entertainment industry, especially the movies where you hear the hypnotist say things like “You are getting sleepy” or “You are falling into a deep, deep sleep”.

This simply is not the case. You do not get ‘knocked out” or “fall asleep”. If you were to compare hypnosis to anything it is more like daydreaming or when you are reading a book or watching a television show and someone comes into the room and asks you a question and you either don’t hear or don’t want to hear them. This is known as an altered state of mind but you are definitely not unconscious, asleep or knocked out. While ‘in hypnosis’ you are at all times conscious and aware and in control of what is happening to you. You can also come out of the hypnotic state anytime that you choose. That leads us to number 3…

3) You can get stuck in hypnosis

Many people believe this to be true. In fact, this is the premise of the movie ‘Office Space’. For the few of you that haven’t seen this movie, the premise goes like this; Peter hates his job and his abusive boss. His girlfriend, who is cheating on him, convinces him to visit a hypnotherapist. The hypnotherapist hypnotizes him causing him to go into a state of ecstasy. However, the hypnotherapist dies immediately after giving the hypnotic suggestion to Peter and he remains in this state of ecstasy traveling though his life in this new, ecstatic state.

Now while this makes a great storyline this scenario is impossible. You cannot be ‘stuck’ in hypnosis. If you are in a hypnotic trance and the hypnotist dropped dead after inducing the trance you would either come out of hypnosis by yourself or drift off to sleep and then wake up later. By the way, you would be shocked to find a dead hypnotherapist in front of you. As a rule, we don’t die in front of our clients. It’s just not good for business.

4) If you can be hypnotized you have a weak mind

Since some people believe that the hypnotherapist “takes over your mind” they also believe that only a weak minded person could allow this to happen. Again, purse science fiction. First, as you read above, no one “takes over your mind” in hypnosis. Second, it’s actually the opposite. If a person trusts the hypnotherapist the more intelligent they are the easier they are to hypnotize. The theory behind this is because hypnosis is the use of visualization and visualization is the use of the imagination. Since more intelligent people have better imaginations they are slightly easier to hypnotize. That’s it.

5) Hypnosis acts like a truth serum and can make you tell the hypnotherapist anything they want to know

Since you are not really unconscious and for the reasons above, hypnosis can’t make you do or reveal anything. During your hypnosis session you are aware of what is happening at all times and can not be forced to do things against your will. You cannot be made to divulge embarrassing secrets, humiliate yourself in any way or disclose where the gold bullion is hidden in your back yard (but you can tell me, I promise not to tell anyone else).

6) If you are hearing the hypnotist you aren’t in a hypnotic state

As you read before, you are not knocked out, asleep or made unconscious while in a hypnotic state. Although people do experience hypnosis in different ways, and some people may not remember what is said to them, in most cases people remember at least part of what the hypnotherapist tells them. This is completely natural, because hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, not unconsciousness. Although you may not have ‘felt’ (whatever that feeling might be) hypnotized, the hypnotherapist can usually see physical changes, and of course your new, modified behavior is your ultimate proof.

Hypnosis is safe and can help

As the Scientific American magazine reported in its July of 2001 issue, “Though often denigrated as fakery or wishful thinking, hypnosis has been shown to be a real phenomenon with a variety of therapeutic uses.” So if you are looking to make quick and lasting behavioral shifts, hypnosis can help you too. It is a very safe way to help you achieve your goals and live the life of your dreams.
