class="wp-caption-text">Motivate yourself to exercise

Do you find that it’s difficult to motivate yourself to exercise? For many people it can be very difficult to find the motivation to climb onto the treadmill let alone start an exercise program.

If this is you try these three easy secrets to motivate yourself to exercise:

Green it Up

1. Green can be a great motivator. A recent university study of cyclists working out on cycle machines found that those who watched a nature video through a green filter said they were more motivated. They also reported that they felt like they weren’t making as much effort even though they were working out at the same intensity.

2. Enjoy the great outdoors. Motivate yourself using natural settings and the color green. Get off the couch and on to your bike and take a ride in the fresh air. Let yourself enjoy the beauty of nature.

3. Grow live plants inside your home. Plants add green to make any space. In addition they also improve your home’s air quality.

4. Add green to your exercise space. To create a greener atmosphere, paint a wall in your workout area forest green. Work out on a lime green exercise mat.

5. Green up your workout clothes. Choose workout clothes with green accents. For example choose green workout shoes or t-shirt and shorts. If green isn’t your favorite color, you can get a green headband or water bottle.

Make Exercise Fun

1. Buddy up. An exercise buddy makes you accountable and makes it much tougher to find excuses for skipping your workout. Socializing makes your workout more enjoyable, especially with someone who tickles your funny bone.

2. Take an exercise class that you find enjoyable. Take a dance or yoga class. Take some tennis or Tai Chi lessons. This allows you to share a sense of camaraderie with your fellow students.

3. Use music to motivate yourself. Check your YMCA or your community fitness center’s calendars for fitness events featuring popular DJs or live music. Even better make your own play list to work out to. Choose any music that you find motivating and makes you feel like dancing.

4. Change it up. Instead of always running on your treadmill find a new jogging trail. Go to the beach or to the local lake to swim or boggy board. A change in environment will keep you motivated and feeling fresh.

5. Learn to enjoy the benefits of exercising. When you first start exercising it doesn’t feel all that good but, if you stick with it, you’ll begin to enjoy the rewards of physical activity. You’ll begin to enjoy how peaceful your body feels as you practice Tai Chi. As you run, you’ll find your body feels more relaxed and calm as the stress rolls out of your body. You’ll also enjoy higher energy levels and a healthier body image.

Use Goals to Motivate Yourself

1. Determine how exercising can improve your health. It’s always wise to talk with your doctor before working out. When you do they’ll probably tell you how your exercise program can alleviate certain medical conditions. For example lowering your blood pressure or achieving lower blood sugar or cholesterol might be the best way to motivate yourself

2. Instead of focusing on losing weight focus on changing your measurements. While losing weight can be a sensible goal for many, reducing your abdominal fat may be an even better indicator of how well your exercise program is working for you. Have a celebration for every inch you take off your waist. Not only will you look better, you’ll also reduce your risk of heart disease and other serious conditions brought on by excessive body fat.

3. Include strength trainer in your workout program. Strong muscles are as good for office workers as they are for weight lifters. Strength workouts not only increase your muscle density it also increases your bone density which helps to protect you from injuries. It also makes your daily activities, such as keeping up with your children or grandchildren, easier. An added reason for increasing your muscle mass is lean muscle tissue burns calories more efficiently than fat.

4. Set performance goals. Performance goals help you monitor your progress and help you motivate yourself to do just a little better. For example you might run a little longer or gradually increase the weights you use for your workout.

Find an Exercise Program to Motivate Yourself Now

I’m sure you already know that exercise is good for you, but it can be very difficult to motivate yourself. If you need a little help getting to like it try incorporating these tips into your workout program.

You just might find that these tips will get you off your couch and looking forward to your next workout.
Use these habits of highly successful people

Are you stressed out because you always have so much to do? Do find that you have so many work tasks, home chores and family activities that you feel completely overwhelmed?

Is there any way to do it all?

If you feel your plate is often too full, maybe it’s time to try using some of the organizational habits of highly successful people to accomplish more.

1. Find more balance

You are awake roughly 16 hours a day. Balance your life by segmenting your daily activities into a plan then use your plan to achieve more balance in your activities.

• One plan could be working 50% (8 hours) of your waking hours, investing twenty-five percent (4 hours) of your time with your family and then taking the other 25% to clean the garage.

• While achieving balance can be difficult, having a plan that helps you work toward your goal can greatly improve your life. That leads us to number 2…

2. Create a plan

Every evening, before you go to bed, think about the things you need to do the next day. By being proactive and thinking about what tomorrow might bring you won’t be so overwhelmed when it arrives.

Here’s a guide to help you decide on the tasks you’ll work on the following day.

• What do you have to do and where?

• How much time will it take?

• Who’s going to be with you?

3. Make a to-do list

Not only is this one of the organizational habits of highly successful people it can also help you sleep better. A to-do list helps you collect those scattered bits of thoughts that keep going over and over in your head. Your list can help you better focus on each task as you do it rather than being overwhelmed by the details of many tasks.

• You list will reduce your stress level. Plus each check you put on your list will help you feel great and motivate you to continue focusing on making your list and completing your tasks.

4. Think about and then write down your long-term goals

Tack your long term one year or more goals up on your refrigerator or the bathroom mirror where you can look at them as you plan out each day. This way, you can focus on the tasks that will contribute to their accomplishment. Just having your goals in sight will fire up your passion for your goals.

5. Don’t try to do too much

These easiest way overwhelm yourself is trying to do too much. Instead of trying to do everything on your list, circle the three tasks that are most important on your list. Start on number one first thing in the morning, and then work your way down. This will help you make sure that you accomplish your most important tasks.

6. Set a realistic time frame

There are only 24 hours in the day. If you’re sleeping 8 that only gives you 16 hours to do everything else. Instead of trying to do everything in one day, divide your big jobs into smaller tasks. By being realistic about what you can accomplish you avoid setting yourself up for failure.

7. Give yourself real time feedback

As you work, if you find that you want to go further on a task than what you had planned, think about how doing so will affect your ability to get started on the other things you had planned to do that day. After weighing the pros and cons you can continue to move forward, confident about your decision to continue or to move on.

Use these 7 Habits of Highly Successful People to Get More Done Starting Today

Stop stressing yourself out by trying to do too much. Use these simple daily habits of highly successful people to make more time to do what you really want to do and let you enjoy life more!

_______________________________________________________________________________
<p

It does.” – William James

How do you stay motivated?

It doesn’t matter what it is you’re trying to do, losing weight, trying to land a new dream job or finding the person of your dreams, your motivation will make the difference between success and defeat.

Success takes preparation and hard work, which is seldom easy. You’ll need persistence and motivation to reach your goals.

So how do you motivate yourself?

Use These Simple Ways to Motivate Yourself

1. Use the Success (and failure) of Others to Motivate You

While there are scores of people who could have made it yet didn’t, it is also filled with many people who used their own motivation to succeed.

• While success stories are very motivational, you can also motivate yourself by learning from the failures of others. Those that tried and failed can serve as lessons of what not to do and can motivate you to work hard to reach success.

• On the other hand, men and women that are enjoying great amounts of success can help you crystallize a vision of where you can one day be.

• Seeing people who are just like you becoming successful can help to reinforce the idea that it is indeed possible to turn your own dreams into a reality. If they can be successful, why can’t you?

• Remember life takes you in the direction you focus. Rather than making excuses for why you can’t reach success, focus on discovering all the reasons why you can!

2. Remember Your Why

One of the best ways to motivate yourself is to stay focused on your purpose.

For example, if you subject your body to intense levels of physical exertion every morning by running with no meaning behind it, you’ll probably lose interest.

On the other hand, if you’re training to run a marathon, you’ll probably be motivated to spend significant amounts of time running every day.

• A great way to motivate yourself is reminding yourself every day why you’re doing all the preparation. By focusing on your “why” you’ll find your better able to focus your energy into the preparation you need to achieve the results you’re looking for.

• While it’s important to focus on the reason you’re doing something, if you can’t come up with a compelling reason, maybe you should be doing something else.

3. Believe that YOU CAN

As you work day in and day out, the grind can cause you to question yourself and your abilities.

Every day review your positive traits and have faith that your skills and hard work will pay off. If you don’t review your positive attributes regularly you’ll find yourself planting a seed of doubt in everything that you do.

• Having faith in yourself means continuing to move in the direction of your goals even when you’re not clear where your steps will take you. This means that, even if you’re not sure exactly how you’re going to achieve your goal, you can still take steps towards that goal, knowing in your heart that you’ll be able to successfully overcome any challenges as they appear.

Stat Using these Ways to Motivate Yourself Today!

If you practice these simple ways to motivate yourself every day you’ll soon you’ll find that your lackluster efforts are all a thing of the past.

You’ll also discover that your motivation comes more naturally as you boldly go toward your future success!

_______________________________________________________________________________
<p

Average doses of caffeine (85-250 mg, the equivalent of 1-3 cups of coffee) may result in feelings of alertness, decreased fatigue, and eased flow of thought. High doses (250-500 mg) can result in restlessness, nervousness, insomnia, and tremors. In high doses, caffeine can cause a hyperadrenergic syndrome resulting in seizures and cardiovascular instability.”<span

While some experts say energy drinks are not necessarily harmful, there are presently 15 deaths have been possibly linked to the drinks that the FDA is investigating.

Before discussing healthy options to energy drinks, let’s take a look at the issues they bring.

What You Need to Know About Energy Drinks

1. Read the Label Before You Drink

While the FDA regulates sodas and food it doesn’t regulate the caffeine and other ingredients that go into energy drinks. Because energy drinks are considered a dietary supplement it can be impossible to tell how much caffeine and other additional stimulants like the herb guarana you’re getting.

2. Only Use Energy Drinks in Moderation

If after reading the label you still want to drink energy drinks try limiting your consumption to small amounts on a full stomach. Take small slow, sips especially when you’re thirsty because it’s when you’re thirsty it’s easy to overindulge.

3. Watch Out for Symptoms of Caffeine Toxicity

An overdose of caffeine is known as caffeine toxicity. In the same Medscape.com article quoted above the author reported, “Death from caffeine toxicity is rare, but it has been reported due to dysrhythmias, seizures, and aspiration of emesis. Oral doses of caffeine greater than 10 g can be fatal in adults. The average daily adult intake should generally be less than 500 mg/d. Long term toxicity can cause health problems.”

If you do decide to consume energy drinks, watch out for symptoms such as heart palpitations, increased blood pressure, anxiety and an upset stomach.

4. Don’t Mix Energy Drinks With Alcohol

The problem with mixing alcohol with energy drinks is it’s easy to underestimate how intoxicated you when you mix alcohol with a stimulant. Not understanding how intoxicated you are can lead to driving under the influence and drinking a lot more alcohol than you intended.

5. Discuss these Issues with Your Kids

Nearly all marketing of energy drinks is directed at young people. Since that’s the case take the time to talk over the problems of energy drinks with your kids. Explain to them that health experts recommend that adolescent drink no more than 100 milligrams of caffeine a day.

6. Talk with Your Doctor

Your doctor will tell you that it’s best to forego energy drinks if you have certain medical conditions like heart disease or high blood pressure. Like all drugs this is also true for women who are pregnant or are nursing.

Healthy Alternatives to Energy Drinks

Don’t get me wrong. Like many other people, I enjoy the boost I get from a cup of coffee or two in the morning. You may also.

While it’s understandable that you might need an energy boost every now and then, you can get your boost from healthy options that will help you steer clear of any risk of excess caffeine or other adverse reactions from unregulated energy drinks.

Healthy Options to Perk Yourself Up

1. Exercise

Instead of tossing back an energy drink hit the gym. It has been found that exercise is one of the best ways to give your energy a boost. If you don’t like the gym, take a Pilates class or go for a brisk walk.

2. Make Sure You Get Enough Sleep

If you don’t get enough rest you’re going to be tired. So instead of boosting your energy with a drink get adequate sleep. This is a very healthy option to keep you feeling your best. An easy way to improve your sleep is to keep a consistent sleep schedule even on the weekends.

3. Drink Water Throughout the Day

Most people don’t drink enough water. The problem with not drinking water is that dehydration causes fatigue. Don’t carry water in plastic bottles. They have been shown to have carcinogens and add to our growing pollution problem. Instead, carry a steel water bottle around with you so you can stay hydrated all day long.

4. Eat Five to Six Small Meals a Day

Eating smaller and more frequent meals is one of the best healthy options to keep your energy constant throughout the day. Digestion takes a lot of energy and eating large meals puts an extra load on your body. Instead of eating three large meals a day eat five or six small meals and/or snacks.

5. Eat Lots of Complex Carbohydrates

Complex carbohydrates are an excellent source of long lasting energy. Instaed of energy drinks, eat lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

6. Practice Healthy Weight Management

If you are lugging around extra pounds you are putting a strain on your heart and other body organs. This can drain your energy levels. Following healthy weight management practices and increasing your activity level can help you reach your ideal weight and maintain it.

7. Practice Deep Breathing Techniques

Most people don’t breathe correctly. Just changing the way you breathe can help you feel more vigorous. Practicing deep breathing techniques from Yoga or Qigong can make a dramatic difference to your energy levels.

8. Brighten Up Your Environment

If you want more energy, turn up the lights. Exposure to bright lights has been found to be one of the fastest ways to increase your energy levels. You can also increase your vitamin D levels by taking a noontime walk and enjoying the sun.

9. If You Like Caffeine Get it From a Measureable Source

Most adults can safely consume about 200 to 300 milligrams per day of caffeine so get your caffeine form a measurable source. It’s easier to keep track of the amounts in well-known items in beverages like coffee, tea or cola-products and chocolate.

For example, a cup of coffee has about 100 to 150 milligrams.

Choose Healthy Options

Since commercial energy drinks sales total more than $5 billion a year, the regulation of energy drinks will probably run into resistance.

Until energy drinks are regulated use them with caution.

Even better, choose healthy options and get your energy the old fashioned way by getting plenty of sleep, exercising, keeping a healthy weight and eating a healthy diet.

<em

It comes from your own actions.” – The Dalai Lama

If you go down the street and randomly ask people what they want in life, the answer you’ll often get is “I just want to be happy”.

The funny thing is that even though that’s what most people say they want, very few people actually can tell you what it means to be happy.

Do you know what’s really funny? Most people who are happy will tell you they aren’t seeking happiness.

While this may seem counterintuitive at first, if you take a look at the common traits of happy people, they all seem to have a similar pattern to living their lives.

People who are happy are happy not as a result of chasing after happiness but they are happy because of the actions they take.

Finding Happiness

1. Develop an attitude of gratitude

Stop taking the good things in your life for granted and don’t tell me your life doesn’t have any good things!

You probably have a car, a roof over your head plenty of food to eat. There are probably also many other aspects of your life, such as having access to an education and health care system that a majority of the people on this planet could only dream of.

• People who are happy seem to be contented with what they have and where they are in life.

• Developing an attitude of gratitude requires nothing more than a shift in the way you look at life. Instead of trying to change your circumstances change the way you think about them.

• A simple way of developing an attitude of gratitude is making a point of reflecting on everything that you’re grateful for at least once a day. A perfect time to do this is as you fall asleep at night.

This does two things for you. First it helps you to brush your cares away allowing you to fall into restful slumber. Second it prepares your subconscious mind for a great day tomorrow

2. Set realistic goals

Very few people ever experience overnight success.

While if you are talented you might get a chance for fame and fortune on “American Idol” or “The Voice”, even those people don’t experience success overnight. Most have prepared for a few years and some for even decades before experiencing success.

When you set unrealistic goals you set yourself up for disappointment. On the other hand, happy people are realistic and pragmatic when it comes to setting and achieving their goals.

• Happy people understand that you need to be realistic about the time and effort needed to achieve your goals. They also understand that when you fall short, you need to reevaluate and shift your approach. Then put your effort into the additional work you need to reach your goal.

• One of the easiest ways for finding happiness is to understand you’re just not going to achieve all the goals you set for yourself, no matter how much work you put into them. There can be outside factors that affect your outcome. Learn from it and go on.

Remember, finding happiness is in the journey, not the goal

3. Stay focused on Other People’s Needs

Some of the happiest people in the world are those who put the needs of others first. For example, the Dalai Lama seems to be focused on how to make the world and the lives of others better.

Why is putting others first on of the best ways to find happiness?

• When you put other people first it requires for you to have a more humble and appreciative outlook on life. In addition, by focusing on making others happy, happiness will invariably circle back into your own life.

What Actions Are You Taking to Develop Happiness in Your Life Today?

Stop looking for ways for finding happiness and start taking actions that make you and others happy.

If you take some time to integrate these simple ways to find happiness into your daily living, you’ll soon discover that happiness abounds around you in every area of your life. _______________________________________________________________________________

Steps for improving your self esteem

“Nothing builds self-esteem and self-confidence like accomplishment.” -Thomas Carlyle

How do you see yourself?

How you see yourself, your self-esteem, is one of the most important and powerful forces in your life. That’s because how you see yourself often turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

If you don’t see yourself as being able to do something, for example, meet new people, then you’ll have difficulty meeting new people. This is an issue of how you esteem yourself, commonly known as your self-esteem.

The good news is if you’re lacking in this area there are ways to improve it.

How Your Self-Esteem Affects You

Your self-esteem affects your relationships with others. If you don’t see yourself as being worthy of having quality relationships them you will probably find yourself continually in unsatisfying relationships that are either abusive or lacking in some fundamental way.

Oftentimes a person with low self-esteem has feelings of nervousness, anxiety and a pervasive sense of their own inadequacy.

This leads to a vicious cycle of seeing yourself as inadequate which leads to lower and lower levels of self-esteem.

Improving Your Self Esteem

Just as a weakened self-esteem lends itself to all of the issues mentioned above, improving your self esteem can guide you in the direction of the positive outcomes you desire.

How can you strengthen your self esteem? How can you begin to put those unhappy feelings behind you and start living the life you were meant to live?

Here are 3 Simple Strategies for Improving Your Self Esteem

1. Focus on Your Good traits

To get rid of those negative beliefs that “you’re not good enough” focus on your good traits.

• Write down all down the things that you can do well and examples of the things you’ve been successful at in the past. While you may not feel any difference immediately, merely writing down these your good traits and what you’ve done well helps to begin to reverse your negative thinking and beliefs.

What you’ll find is, over time, you’re feeling more confident and a lot better about yourself.

2. Put your needs first

You don’t have to be selfish, just stop putting your own needs aside to make others happy.

Make yourself happy first.

• It’s okay to want to make others happy. In fact, this can seem very noble. Yet doing this at the expense of your own happiness is a recipe for dissatisfaction and resentment in the long run.

• As you practice making yourself happy you’ll be able to make others will be happy too. Everyone wins because you’re much more pleasant company to be around when you’re happy.

3. Find friends that build you up

You need to have friends who support your self esteem.

• If your current group cuts you down and finds fault in what you do all the time, find another group.

Why waste time hanging out with people that make you feel bad when there are many people out there who will support you and make you feel better about yourself?

• You probably already have friends that are there to pick you up when you fall down. Hang out with them. These are true friends.

• While finding them is not always easy and may not happen overnight, that’s okay. What’s important is to keep in mind that you deserve people in your life that see you in a positive light.

Start Using these Tips for Improving Your Self Esteem Today!

By taking these steps for improving self esteem, you’ll be going a long way towards strengthening your self confidence and will be well on the road towards feeling happy about your life. Why not start using these tips today?

Healthy Weight Management vs. Short term Weight Loss

When a client comes to me wanting to lose weight using hypnosis and Neuro Linguistic Programming Techniques, my first questions is “Why do you want to lose weight?”

I ask this because I’ve found that once you understand your “why” the “how” becomes much easier.

The “Weight Loss” Mindset

When it comes to losing weight the reason most people only experience temporary success is they have a “weight loss” mindset. In other words the have a short term goal such as being able to look good for a special day or event.

For example, you might be going to a family or class reunion or you may want to look good at your nephew’s wedding.

While these might be good inspiration to spur you to start to get back into shape, if you want to maintain your results you need to shift your thinking.

Instead of focusing on your reasons to lose weight you need to focus on your reasons for staying healthy.

Staying Healthy Vs. class="wp-caption-text">Healthy Eating and Dieting Tips

Have you searched for healthy eating guidelines online?

Do you find that many of the “dieting tips” you find there are just not practical? I mean, who has the time to spend half of Sunday preparing carefully portioned meals for the rest of the week?

Maybe you’re one of those individuals that don’t find it financially feasible to buy prepackaged meals with just the right portions or cringe at the thought of weighing your food so you can calculate your caloric intake.

If you’re fed up with all those impractical dieting tips then take a look at these healthy eating guidelines you can use for healthy weight management.

1. Be Smart When Eating Out

Most restaurant portions are enormous, in the words of the fast good industry, super-sized. Since you were a kid you have been taught, if it’s on the plate, eat it.

That’s a problem. Try ordering from the kid’s menu if possible. Those portions are more reasonably sized, at least for adults.

2. Snack on Healthy Foods at Home and at Work

Instead of going for the chips or candy, keep a bowl of fruit on the kitchen table to munch on. You can also keep a container of celery or carrot sticks in the refrigerator to give your mouth something to do if you’re bored. At work you can keep a couple of pop-open cans of fruit salad in your desk to grab when those first hunger pains begin.

If a healthy snack is available and easy to eat you’ll probably eat it.

3. Eat Frozen Vegetables

Frozen vegetables are a lot better for you than canned veggies. That’s because canned veggies are low in nutrition and high in sodium. Find the biggest economy size bags possible that have zip closures. That’ll make it easy to pour out a single serving for every meal.

4. Steam Your Vegetables

When it comes to healthy eating guidelines none is better than steaming your vegetables. This is because steaming allows your food to retain nearly all of its natural nutrients. On top of that, steaming makes your veggies taste great. This means you’ll be more likely to eat them instead of filling up on fatty foods that pack on the pounds.

5. Eat Sitting Down

If you can help it, never eat standing up.

When you eat standing up you are most likely just shoveling food into your mouth without thinking. Eating supplies you with the fuel you need so treat it with respect.

Fix yourself a plate and sit down and take the time to eat it properly. In addition to allowing you to relax for a few minutes it will also allow you to chew your food more thoroughly.

6. Start Eating More Meals

Instead of eating three meals a day, eat five or six.

When you eat three meals a day your body tends to store whatever it doesn’t need right that moment. When you start eating smaller meals more often you keep your metabolism working throughout the day.

Start each day with a small breakfast then have a piece of fruit with crackers or toast at mid-morning. Eat a light lunch and then have a mid-afternoon snack. This way when dinner time rolls around you won’t be starving. Finally eat a dinner with smaller portion sizes.

You’re not eating more food; you’re breaking up the same amount of food into smaller meals.

7. Delete Soda from Your Menu

Soda is full of corn sugar and empty calories. It is the number one cause of obesity in the U.S. Soda has zero nutrients, just lots of sugar.

If you must drink something sweet try water with a little bit of fruit juice.

8. Drink More Water

According to the FDA recommends you need at least 8 full 8 ounce glasses of water a day to keep your body working right.

Drinking water does more than just make you feel full, it also helps your body digest foods properly and cleans out your system.

9. Exercise

Healthy weight management requires a combination of diet and exercise. If you want to look and feel great you need to exercise regularly.

This doesn’t mean you need to go to the gym. Go for a walk, play volleyball with friends or just spend half an hour doing something active.

10. Stay Away from Salty, Fatty Foods

Potato chips are one of the worst foods possible. That’s why all healthy eating guidelines tell you to stay away form them!

Chips and the like are fried in hydrogenated oil which contributes lots of fat and empty calories to your diet. Instead of chips, stick with healthy snacks like nuts or a handful of dried fruit or a cup of yogurt.

These choices give you a lot more nutritional benefit with a lot fewer calories.

Start Following these Healthy Eating Guidelines and Dieting Tips Today

These healthy eating guidelines are absolutely essential for healthy weight management. Best of all they are quick and you can easily put them to use today!

By following these dieting tips you’ll look and feel better. Soon you’ll be fitting into those skinny jeans and feeling years younger.

Warning Signs of Clinical Depression

Clinical depression is a serious disorder that affects millions of people all over the world. If the warning signs of clinical depression are left unaddressed it has the potential of completely destroying a person’s life.

If you ask a group of people who’ve have been affected by clinical depression to define it, you’re bound to hear a wide range of answers. That’s because the signs and symptoms of depression aren’t the same for everyone.

Signs and Symptoms of Depression

In the past few decades the definition of depression has drastically changed. When I was studying psychology in the late 1970’s and the early 1980’s, clinical depression was an illness was completely debilitating.

Charles Barber, a psychiatry lecturer at Yale University, described it in the “Scientific American Mind” as follows: “A true diagnosis of major depression involves a combination of the following: inability to feel pleasure of any kind whatsoever, loss of interest in everything, extreme self-hatred or guilt, inability to concentrate or to do the simplest of things, sleeping all the time or not being able to sleep at all, dramatic weight gain or loss, and wanting to kill yourself or actually trying to kill yourself.”

Today people are told they are depressed when something uncomfortable happens in their lives and become frustrated or sad. These would be events such as not doing well on a test or when your favorite team loses a ballgame.

These simply aren’t true signs or symptoms of clinical depression.

If your idea of depression is feeling down because you lost a ballgame then you’re way off. The signs and symptoms of clinical depression are much worse than simple frustration or sadness.

In the same article Charles Barber goes on to say, “Truly depressed people do not smile or laugh; they may not talk; they are not fun to be with; they do not wish to be visited; they may not eat and have to be fed with feeding tubes so as not to die; and they exude a palpable and monstrous sense of pain.”

Even if a person doesn’t have as severe signs of depression as these, a common symptom is a despair that cloaks everything in a person’s life who is suffering from it. They feel it in everything they feel and do.

Physical Signs of Clinical Depression

Clinical depression takes the life out of you. It saps your energy, focus, concentration, and especially your joy.

A person who is clinically depressed doesn’t care about anything. Nothing matters to them and not even the people they love are important.

Clinical depression not only takes its toll on your emotions and causes mental anxiety; it can cause serious physical problems as well.

A person who is clinically depressed may lose their appetite or eat incessantly. It also zaps all their energy and motivation.

How Clinical Depression Can Affect You

If you’re clinically depressed, you activity level will decrease, often to zero. By itself, this lack of activity can cause a number of problems, but when added to some of the other affects of clinical depression it becomes a serious illness.

One of the biggest problems with being depressed for a long period of time is you become accustomed to the feeling. Then any other emotion is unfamiliar and can be frightening.

The Problems with Clinical Depression

1. Clinical depression can lead to insomnia and lack of sleep. After a while it can completely strip your body of the sleep you need to function properly.

2. Clinical depression can lead to poor nutrition. If you are clinically depressed your appetite can be suppressed. Because of the effort needed to plan and prepare a meal you can decide to skip eating or only eat junk food. This can lead to malnutrition and cause several health problems.

3. Clinical depression can cause aches and pains. Clinical depression causes changes in your brain chemistry. According to the Harvard Medical Center, “Brain cells usually produce levels of neurotransmitters that keep senses, learning, movements, and moods perking along. But in some people who are severely depressed or manic, the complex systems that accomplish this go awry.”

The chemicals, known as neurotransmitters, that help you to feel happy are the same neurotransmitters that signal pain in your brain. This can result in an increase in physical aches and pains. These pains can then turn around and kick in the sad feelings causing the cycle to begin again.

4. Clinical depression can lead to hygiene issues. A person who is affected by clinical depression doesn’t have the energy or the motivation to be concerned with self-care.

What are the Warning Signs of Clinical Depression?

The following are red flags that a person is clinically depressed and should be taken seriously:

• Constant and severe sadness about their life and everything in it

• Feelings of hopelessness and despair

• Issues with sleeping or insomnia

• Anger and irritability

• Lack of focus and concentration

• A lack of interest in nearly everything

• Feeling worthless, useless

• Feeling strangely guilty for no reason at all

• A severe change in weight either up or down

• A Lack of energy and constant fatigue

What to Do if You Notice these Warning Signs and Symptoms of Clinical Depression

Clinical depression can be caused by a certain event, the change of seasons, a loss of someone close, or, in some cases, a chemical imbalance in the brain.

The treatment for clinical depression usually involves counseling and/or taking medications that helps alter brain chemistry.

The one thing you need to remember about clinical depression is that it’s a serious condition and won’t go away by itself. As it progresses, clinical depression will feed on itself and will become more and more debilitating.

If someone is depressed long enough it can be very difficult to more them out aft her depressed state. It can make them believe that there is not way out and cause them to become resigned to being miserable all the time.

This doesn’t have to happen!

If you know someone who is who shows these warning signs of clinical depression, the best thing you can do is to talk with them and be their friend.

If you notice any of these warning signs of depression in yourself or in a loved one you need to be take them seriously and contact a mental health professional.

Clinical depression can be treated and it doesn’t have to ruin your life or the life of someone you care about!

With proper help and support, clinical depression can be managed, allowing you to move past its affects so you can again live the joyful life you deserve.

<em

As I see clients in my San Diego office I often find the need to debunk some of the myths my clients have heard about hypnosis.

One of the biggest questions I get is “Does hypnosis work?”

When I hear this I want to blurt out, “No it’s just a big fake, that’s why I have invested so much time and money learning about it” but I don’t. I want them to understand what a powerful tool hypnosis can be for them and for overcoming the issue that is facing them.

Thoughts About Hypnosis

Way back in 2001 the well respected journal ‘Scientific American’ said, “Though often denigrated as fakery or wishful thinking, hypnosis has been shown to be a real phenomenon with a variety of therapeutic uses…”

Further back in 1991 Business Week wrote, “Hypnosis, once scorned as wizardry more appropriate for the stage than a doctor’s office, has gained respect among medical professionals. Many view it as an efficient tool for treating problems not caused by serious disorders.”

Even though science continues to present powerful evidence about hypnosis’ effective use, if you’re like most people, when you hear the word hypnosis the image of a dark figure with a goatee swinging a pocket watch back and forth in an attempt to take control over your mind appears. And this goateed man will soon have you doing his evil bidding for him.

These myths simply aren’t true.

The Truth about Hypnosis

While there has been much written about hypnosis, these might give you a better picture of the truth about hypnosis.

In 2004 Dr. David Spiegel, who was the Assoc. Chair of Psychiatry Stanford University School of Medicine at the time, was on the Jane Pauley show when he said, “…hypnosis is not mind control. It’s a naturally occurring state of concentration; it’s actually a means of enhancing your control over both your mind and your body.”

In the same year an article in ‘The Capital’ (Annapolis, MD) said, “Approved as a valid treatment by the American Medical Association in 1958, hypnotism has become increasingly accepted by the medical community. Its use for chronic pain was approved in 1996 by the National Institutes of Health.”

You’re Being Hypnotized Daily

Most people don’t realize it but you are being hypnotized daily. For example, have you ever been watching a movie and felt like you were actually there? That’s a form of hypnosis.

Have you ever been pulled into a good book by the way the author described a scene or a person? That’s a form of hypnosis.

Maybe you’ve driven somewhere in your car and arrived at your destination without even being what was going on around you. That’s a form of hypnosis.

Have you ever given up at succeeding at something and, as a result you didn’t succeed? That’s also a form of hypnosis.

The simple truth is you’re in going in and out of a state of hypnosis all the time. What you need to decide is whether or not you want to be in control of your hypnotic state.

Hypnosis Defined

A common definition of hypnosis is “a relaxed and focused state of concentration”.

When you were driving or watching the movie or reading your book or thinking of failure, you were relaxed and completely focused and concentrating on only one thing. That’s a form of hypnosis.

Common Misconceptions bout Hypnosis:

1. Under hypnosis the hypnotist can make you tell them your whole life’s story.

Rubbish. A hypnotic state merely opens you to positive suggestions. You still have complete control over your thoughts and actions and you won’t divulge anything you wouldn’t ordinarily divulge.

• While it won’t make you tell any “secrets” hypnosis can help you bring forward some inner truths or insights which can help you get over things that have held you back in the past. Hypnosis is generally used to help shed light on self-sabotaging behaviors or other situations you’re currently dealing with.

2. The hypnotist can make you do things against your will.

Again, rubbish. Back in 2009 ‘Business Week’ wrote, “A hypnotist can’t make you do anything you don’t really want to do. There’s nothing spooky about it.”

The truth is you will not do anything in a hypnotic state that you wouldn’t do in any other state, given the right set of circumstances.

This myth actually comes about as a result of people watching hypnosis “shows” where people do all kinds of comic behavior.

Are those shows real? Ted Benton of Winchester Hospital’s Community Health Institute in Woburn was quoted in 2002 in the Boston Globe, “Unfortunately, stage hypnosis is real hypnosis. It creates the illusion that there is a loss of control, which is not true. All of the people who are being hypnotized on stage are wide-awake. They know exactly what they are doing. But it’s usually done in poor taste, and it really scares people.”

The key to these shows is the people who are doing these outrageous behaviors know what they are doing and actually want to do them. That’s why certain suggestions work on them

They want to be part of the show so they go along with what they feel they are “supposed” to do. They absolutely won’t do anything against their morals and they are most certainly not doing anything against their will.

3. You Can Get Stuck in a Hypnotic State

Unlike the character in the movie “Office Space” you can’t become stuck in a permanent state of hypnosis. Since you’re merely in a relaxed and focused state it’s impossible to be any more “stuck” in a state of hypnosis than to be “stuck” in a state of constant ecstasy.

• Even if, like in the movie, the hypnotherapist had a heart attack one of two things would happen. Either you would fall asleep and wake up naturally or your mind would eventually realize that nothing was going on around you and bring you back to a fully wakened state.

Now the only real issue you’d have would be calling 911 for the poor hypnotherapist.

Benefits of Hypnosis

In 2004 ‘Better Homes and Gardens’ reported, “Today, hypnosis–or hypnotherapy–is becoming a respected alternative for an array of conditions. It has long been used to help people quit smoking and overcome fears, such as the fear of public speaking, but now the practice is branching out into new areas.”

Although most of my hypnosis clients come to my San Diego Office to either quit smoking or lose weight, hypnosis can be helpful in many ways, from learning how to manage stress to developing the type of confidence needed to find a new person in your life.

National Public Radio reported in ‘All Things Considered “ in 2000, “Now a new study in the current issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry offers evidence that hypnotized individuals do, indeed, experience distinct changes in brain function that mere role-playing would not account for.”

Some research has even suggested that hypnotherapy may be able to make your body look younger. It’s speculated it does this by reprogramming your new cells and instructing them to find the healthiest blueprint to develop.

How You Can Use Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy

In 2002 Dr. David Spiegel, psychiatry professor and medical director of the Complementary Medicine Clinic at Stanford University, was asked by ‘Washingtonian’ magazine, “Why does hypnosis work?” He answered, “Because the patients are in an altered state, solely focused on the message, soaking it up, rather than in a psychological mode in which they can trivialize or ignore it.”

While there are many uses for hypnosis, there are 2 generally accepted ways to induce hypnosis. They are self-hypnosis and hypnotherapy or seeing a specialist often called a hypnotherapist.

Let’s take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of both of them:

Self-Hypnosis

The biggest advantage of self-hypnosis is you can use CDs and MP3 downloads to practice self-hypnosis in the comfort of your own home. Many people find that because you’re in a very safe place they can get into a comfortable and relaxed state more quickly and remain there for extended periods of time.

Relaxation or the induction is a key part of being hypnotized. There are many programs that can help take you through the induction process which will allow your mind and body to become totally relaxed. Once your mind and body are relaxed you are well on your way to accomplishing the changes you wish to make.

A big advantage of self-hypnosis is the cost. While seeing a hypnotherapist can be very powerful the cost can be a giant hurdle for some people.

• Hypnotherapists

When people ask me about using self-hypnosis recordings I tell them that for the best results, seeing a hypnotherapist is the best way to start your hypnosis regimen. Just as having a coach in any area can shortcut your success, so does having a hypnotherapist to guide you in the beginning a great way to begin your use of hypnosis as a tool for change.

Another advantage of using a hypnotherapist is they may see something that you are overlooking. This help with uncovering some of your innermost issues might lead to a quicker and more permanent fix of your issue.

If you have any questions about hypnotherapy, most hypnotherapists will allow a free phone consultation (just as I do). This allows you to get a feel for them and their abilities. If you would like a phone consultation with me, call my office at (619) 293-3255 and we’ll set something up for you.

Using a Hypnosis for Change

In 2002 the National Women’s Health Resource Center said, “As a relaxation technique, hypnosis can help reduce your stress. It’s also used to relieve phobias, lessen anxiety, break addictions and to ease symptoms of conditions such as asthma or allergy. Using hypnosis can help patients control nausea and vomiting from cancer medications and morning sickness, reduce bleeding during surgery, steady the heartbeat and bring down blood pressure.”

Over the years I have helped people using hypnotherapy on many issues. You notice I said I helped them, I didn’t make them. Since nobody can make you do anything you need to remember that you must feel comfortable and be open to hypnotherapy if you want to make a change.

The effectiveness of hypnosis and hypnotherapy depends totally on you. If your mind resists the idea of being hypnotized then you won’t be hypnotized, it’s that simple. If you’re not comfortable and willing to make a change, hypnosis will not work, nor will anything else.

In order to make any significant changes in your life you have to WANT them. If you have the desire and make the commitment then hypnosis can be a very powerful tool to help you make those changes you seek.

So if you’re serious, what are you waiting for? Why not start taking the action you need to make those changes today?

<em
