These are examples of what are known as habits or shortcuts.

But Shortcuts Can Have Problems

Shortcuts become problems when they turn into false beliefs.

While it is good to have true beliefs, beliefs that keep you safe – like gravity will cause you to fall to the earth if you jump from a high place – beliefs, like “I can’t stop overeating” or “I just don’t have any confidence” or “I’m always stressed out” are not helpful at all.

These types of beliefs can make you struggle and fail to achieve your goals and dreams.

If you’re stressed out, lack confidence, overeat, smoke or have some other habit that is not healthy for you – you don’t do that behavior because you think the shortcut helps you– in fact you understand it is not helping – you do it because that shortcut has helped you in some way in the past.
